i never heard of Reicast until now, would you recommend it over nullDC? i haven't tried either yet
Reicast is kind of a weird thing. There’s still no stable, reliable, stand-alone Windows build as of yet. It was made primarily for Android, but a Windows version has been in the background for a while now. It’s just never at a point where they release it.
The only way to use Reicast at this point in Windows is to do so through RetroArch. RetroArch has something called a “Reicast OIT Core” which seems to produce very accurate visuals, but still has a few other CPU-related hiccups.
This loop in Green Forest, for example, has trouble executing properly because of an emulation error (I assume, anyway). Most of Sonic Adventure 2 seems to have run fine otherwise, though, outside of a few minor sound glitches.
Venturing beyond Sonic Adventure 2, though, and I find Reicast has pretty spotty compatibility. I keep a small handful of Dreamcast games around strictly for testing purposes, and here’s how the current version Reicast favored:
Looney Tunes Space Race: Intro sequence has sound, menus have sound, once you get in to a race you only have music. Game plays fine otherwise.
Crazy Taxi: Freezes after the Dreamcast boot up logo
Crazy Taxi 2: Played until I ran out of time. Seems perfect.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2: Menus seem very sluggish and the game crashes the moment you “Push A to Play” after its done loading a level.
Rayman 2: Played first two levels. Scene transition effects don’t display, but otherwise seems perfect.
Sonic Adventure: Played up through Emerald Coast. Some minor sound problems with “continuous” sounds (helicopter rotors, the rain during Chaos 0). Otherwise seems perfect.
Sonic Adventure 2: Played up to around Metal Harbor. Some minor sound problems with “continuous” sounds (street board sound, grind rail sound). Logic emulation problems when going around some loops. Otherwise seems perfect.
I haven’t tried any of the other usual suspects yet (Jet Set Radio, Shenmue). Basically, on the games Reicast supports, they seem to run perfectly. I’ve heard the RetroArch build of Reicast gets updated nightly, so I’m sure compatibility is always going up.
Another new emulator came on the scene recently, called ReDream. That’s available through RetroArch too, but I’ve been told the RetroArch build of ReDream sucks, so it’s best to stick to the stand-alone version.
ReDream is unique as there is a free version and a paid premium version. The paid version is $5, and unlocks the ability to play Dreamcast games in HD resolutions. The free version is stuck to 640x480.
Regarding the above compatibility list, here’s how those same games faired the last time I played around with ReDream (June 2018):
Looney Tunes Space Race: Once you get past the studio logos at boot, there’s no sound at all. Game plays fine otherwise (played 4-5 races)
Crazy Taxi: Played until I ran out of time. Seems perfect.
Crazy Taxi 2: Played until I ran out of time. Seems perfect.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2: Played up to the first tournament. Seems perfect.
Rayman 2: Played first three levels. Seems perfect.
Sonic Adventure: Played up through Emerald Coast. Some polygon sorting errors made Sonic’s face look weird.
Sonic Adventure 2: Played up to around Green Forest. I don’t remember any serious issues.
Wacky Races: Played one race. Sound hitched a little bit. Seemed fine.
Soul Reaver: A very talky intro means I didn’t play this very long but it seemed fine.
ReDream is also special in that it requires basically no setup. I don’t think I even had to give it a BIOS. I pointed it at my folder of ISOs, it automatically configured my Xbox controller, and I was off to the races.
A lot of people also swear by Demul, but I remember struggling to get that to work properly the last time I messed with it. It has significantly higher system requirements than Reicast or ReDream, but apparently has way higher compatibility, too. Your mileage may vary.
I'm sure Tomleecee appreciates a bit of #Sega #Tetris on the #reicast #Dreamcast emulator? #retrogaming
Awww, Reicast crashed and I have to fight a bunch of battles again. There should be more save points.

Эмулятор Dreamcast. Для Android. И для GCW Zero!
Google Play.
