it was a sight he had not expected to see. katara was without a doubt one of the strongest individuals he had ever crossed paths with, and here she was, hiding away in her own pain. the exiled prince frowned, unsure of how to really console someone that was clearly so upset. his uncle was the perfect man when it came to situations like this, so why did zuko struggle so much? all he knew is that katara needed a friend. a shoulder to cry on.
he lowered himself to her height, extending a hand out as he squeezed it affectionately on her shoulder. his expression did not alter as he locked eyes with the waterbender, only rounding with worry, ❝ i know. i’m so sorry. ❞
katara frowned, matching zuko’s GAZE for once. she wondered if the fire prince’s reason for saying sorry was due to her TEARS, or an actual apology about the death of her mother ( neither of these things were zuko’s fault, of course ), but it was APPRECIATED none the less. ‘ thank you --, ’ the response was less than a whisper, a CRACKING voice. her hand went to wipe stray tears.
‘ i think about her a lot, ’ she confessed, and katara took a deep breath, looking upwards towards the night sky. ‘ sometimes i wonder who DID IT -- who could do such a thing. ’ katara glanced towards zuko as he placed himself beside her. ‘ back in BA SING SE, you said ... you said we had that in COMMON, that both our mothers were taken by the fire nation. what did you mean ? ’
