A feast of the senses!
Relative Constructions invite you to join us for a night of feasting, imagery and sound at M16 gallery during the exhibition The Poetic Lens in May 2014
After an intimate tour of the exhibition with live performances by the artists, the candlelit meal will begin with a selection of fresh dips, gourmet cheeses, roe and smoked salmon followed by soup with seasonal vegetables and home baked bread.
The main course will feature spiced aubergine with fresh ginger & tomato accompanied by dhal, raita & saffron rice with your choice of pomegranate, rose petal and marinated goats cheese, or walk on the wild side Waldorf salad.
Then, your hosts will let their creative culinary imaginations run wild with a dessert menu to rival the exhibition: edible photographs, shadow cake with star anise, creamy white noise red velvet underground speaker sponge, chocolate poetry & sweet philosophy, all of which will make an immersive installation of our banquette table.
Be serenaded with the loud and beloved music of Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed as you indulge in the evening’s sensory overload, sipping spiced wine to warm the heart and mixing your own arctic ice explorer cocktails.
All the while, silent & surreal, the cinema of Maya Deren will flicker across the gallery space. This will be a night to remember!

A new print from Ellis
Folding, 2013 is Ellis' contribution to the small handmade prints that are available through our indiegogo campaign. Contributors of $30.00 or more will have the chance to choose from a selection of four prints made by each of the artists.
From Ellis: I should tell you all the story about this one. It's a detail taken from photographic documentation of a performance I did in June this year. I was inspired by a story by Mary Roach who wrote a book called 'Packing for Mars' saying that astronaut candidates for the Japanese space program are required to fold 1000 paper cranes as part of their psychological assessment. The task assesses their ability to do something fiddly and boring over a long period of time. They thread the cranes onto strings so the assessors can see the chronological progression of their folding skills. The assessors can tell if they lose focus or dexterity, if they are able to maintain a certain level of quality or if their cranes become 'sloppy.'The image of astronauts in isolation folding cranes to test their capacity for the kind of work they would face when spending months on the international space station strikes me as beautifully poetic and absurd. I imagined if I could undertake such a task and if my own cranes would be deemed 'sloppy'. I spent three days folding cranes and made 300 - a long way off 1000 - I think I might switch to folding rocket ships for my next experiment....
