RELOOTED GAME OF ALL TIME????
Also before you get all weird about this, I'm not horny for a teen girl, I'm genuinely just so incredibly happy that this rep exists!!!! Like!!! I was a fat teen girl once!!!! Do you know how often you see fat teens in media??? Only as the butt of jokes!!! So to see Cryptic as a bubbly, happy, fasionable teen girl??? Genuinely this means so much to me you have no idea
Some of the (relatively) more good faith criticism that I've seen on Relooted frames it as the game misunderstanding the point of museums and repatriation and the way that relationship exists in the current day. I have several thoughts on that: Relooted's entire premise is that the crew is stealing artifacts that would have been covered by a repatriation treaty that have been knowingly and deliberately removed from public record in order to stop that from happening. This is a thing you learn within the first two missions. They are not taking things just because they are in non African museums, and in fact, if these things were being kept publicly in museums on display for learning they would be addressed in some way by said treaty. Which brings me to my second point- the idea that these artifacts are fine where they are because museums are set up for learning purposes and to share these artifacts with the public. Returning to my first point- none of the artifacts the team repatriates are in public exhibits in museums. They are in private collections, hidden records, often obtained by their current owners from being sold on the Black market and several of the items that are repatriated are stolen human remains.
Additionally baked into this idea is the placid acceptance that African people do not have the ability, or inclination to share these artifacts with the worlds themselves. These items are being taken from these backroom, illegal, collections and returned to African (and other) museums, specifically (if possible) based in the country they originated from (or were initially discovered). The Akan Drum is sent to a Museum of African American History. It is just a refusal on every level to actually engage with the premise and story of the game.
My favorite song from the Relooted soundtrack so far! I don't know what it is about it but it just makes me want to get up and dance.
