The Banality of Evil

Hello bots. Strap in.

I’ve recently been reading a series of essays that were written during the trials of Nazi war criminals. It captures perfectly that old phrase, “I was just taking orders.” Recently, for obvious reasons, I’ve been thinking a lot about how easy, and frankly, common, it is for common people to get swept up in the fervor of a populist movement with misdirected anger toward minorities. I’ve also been thinking about how quickly we like to remove ourselves from our very recent history. 

The atrocities of the Holocaust are unthinkable to most people with a brain and set of basic reasoning skills. We often close ourselves off to it, for good reasons, mind you, it’s incredibly hard to consider that we did that to ourselves. To look at the images from Germany in the 40s and realize it was humans acting on our darkest impulses that did that. We also like to think of the people that did it as monsters. The horrifying fact is that they were not inhuman, born monsters. They were people that did monstrous acts because they were told to.

The terrifying thing about evil is that it comes from the blonde haired, blue eyed Hitler youth. From the sunny disposition of Reagan. From the young white men with the frog avatars. These actions do not well up from the depths of hell, they come from a mix of factors that build up to terrible acts that, in years to come children and grandchildren of those involved will find unthinkable. 

Sometimes we have to face the fact that evil is banal. That we find it everyday and that there is no boogyman to fight. There is no mustache twirling villain that will swing into the saloon as a scary riff is played on the cello. We have to find it ourselves. And as the saying goes, put a frog in boiling water and it'll jump right out, but slowly turn the heat up....
