A Single Day

Some fire up their grills or take it easy in a well worn chair. Some go outside and play with their kids and enjoy the day off from work and other responsibilities. Many lie dead under stars and crosses in quiet green fields.

They were the ones that were told of adventure and peril. They were the ones who were told that the fight was honorable and the cause was just. They were my brothers and my sisters, my compatriots. We share a bond beyond blood.

So before you thank me for my service today, thank the ones who eternally slumber under stars and crosses in quiet green fields. Remember their sacrifice.

Because there’s one day in a year where everyone is supposed to do so, and that’s why you do it. Take a hint from a washed up, dog faced trooper:

You remember them for one day and one day only. I carry their memory every minute of every hour Until I am asleep with my brothers and sisters under stars and crosses in quiet green fields

I miss my brothers, and not a day goes by where I don’t wish our fates could be traded.
