March 8, 2018 - I remember meeting Marquita in Washington Heights. Coogan's. 7pm. A line. I was late as fuck. I rarely travel to the Heights but I met @hecisdead from the @wrucrew during a Blink Fitness Photo & Video shoot in 2017; they both pushed me to come through. Despite being an extrovert, I'm always nervous about meeting new people despite talking with Marquita here and there online. She was the first person to recognize and greet me upon arrival -- and one of the few not so strangers who actually told me she was sorry about the loss of my twins. She read about my story like most people during that time but asked me twice on how I was REALLY feeling -- she truly saw through my forced smile and the way I danced around conversations of going viral. We are both parents and that morning, I was grieving. Out of all of the people there, she stood out for that simple exchange. She gave everyone a pep talk before we ran a 5K. Although we weren't close, we stayed in contact via Instagram. When I heard that she passed away, I was hurt as a friend, parent, wife, member of the running community and human. Reading through all of the incredible messages loaded on her husband's feed @adamrunsnyc feed confirmed exactly how I felt meeting her that day. Some people have a light that exudes from them. If they hug you, it's like they're passing a flame to keep you warm; Quita is that person. I'm thankful for the day we were able to physically meet. Having the opportunity to know you in such a short time was such a pleasure. We lost an incredible leader in the runner community. She was an educator, proud wife and mother. May your words and memory permeate to all of those who you blessed by your presence. If you have the opportunity, please go to her husband's page, click the link and help their family put their children through college and pay for funeral expenses. Hug your family members and friends while they're here. #rememberingquita (at Coogan's NYC) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrGWVfChqg5/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=11hspw2iwl32m
