Help rescue seals during the virus outbreak!

We all love seals, that’s why we’re here! Part of loving them is also wanting to protect and help them;  being a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. That is something that many seal rescues all over the world do, and unfortunately the virus outbreak is hurting them as well. With the virus outbreak having shut down rescues all over the world, they don’t have the usual visitors who would come and give donations that pay for the seals care, including food, supplies (like cleaning and maintenance) or medical care. 

Let’s not forget our rescuers! Let’s help spread awareness for these centers online!

Could you help me, and in turn help them? Here’s my plan! If you have adopted a seal from a rescue, or even just follow and like a seal who has been rescued please make a post about them. Your post should include:

The seal’s name and species

The name of the rescue center they are at

The URL of where people reading your post can adopt the seal and/or support the center

All the things that make the seal you adopted great! This may include the reason you chose the seal you did to adopt them, seeing updates on your seal, knowing you helped- all the reasons you love your seal and why you adopted them.

And of course photos of your adopted seal puppy!

Once you’ve made a post about your puppy send a link to it in my submissions! (Please do not @ tag me, my feed is flooded and I will most likely never see @tags) This way we can keep our rescue centers seen and not forgotten, and encourage others to help support the seals by sharing our adoption stories so followers might want to help too! It’s ok if you don’t have a big following- as long as I see your adoption story I can share it with my followers. If you see a future adoption story you like or touches you, reblog it to keep rescues not forgotten and perhaps encourage someone else to find the joy of adopting a seal puppy too!

FAQ (under the cut)

Q. Can it be a past seal I adopted that has been released already? A. Yes! If a seal you adopted in the past has a story you want to share, please do! Even though people can no longer adopt that specific seal you can instead share the center’s current adoptee’s page.

Q. I adopted more than one seal. Can I make more than one post? A. Yes! It would probably be best to give each seal their own post so the post doesn’t get super long.

Q. Someone already made a post about the seal I adopted. Should I still make a post? A. Yes! Look at it this way, if you saw one post about Cloudberry, would that make you want to see another less? (If it were me and someone else already posted about a seal I wanted to post about, I’d just pick different pictures to keep it interesting.)

Q. I don’t have any followers, no one will see my post. :( A. If you put genuine effort into your post I’m planning to reblog them, you just need to remember to submit the link to my page, then all my followers will see your seal appreciation post! 

Q. Can I share a post on other media sites, such as Facebook? A. Yes! Please only submit the post if it is yours or I have permission to repost the content on my blog, as most followers are unlikely to click links and scroll past a post if it isn’t embedded. Q. Who are the pups in this post? A. Click the pictures, I put the rescue center and name (if available) as the image description.

Q. Can I share this post? A. Yes! Please share it with anyone you know who has adopted a seal and may want to help them further, including seal groups from other sites. They don’t even have to be a Tumblr user, as I can repost their post from Facebook or a direct submission to slushyseals at gmail dot com.

Q. Is there a tag relating to this, for remembering animals rescues across different social media platforms?  A.    We can use #RememberRescues

Spotlight on the Cornish Seal Sanctuary!

During the virus outbreak, many seal rescues have been struggling. They’ve lost workers who would help at the center, and without visitors to the centers many are worried how they will continue to pay for food and necessities to care for seals at their rescue. As part of #RememberRescues , today we’ll be featuring Cornish Seal Sanctuary! The Cornish Seal Sanctuary has been an animal rescue facility in Helford Estuary for more than 60 years. In addition to the Grey Seals, Common Seals, Californian and Patagonian Sea Lions, the Sanctuary also provides a much-needed haven for a variety of other animals such as Otters, Penguins, Sheep, Ponies and Goats. Occasionally the Sanctuary´s facilities and expertise are called upon to aid in the rescue of other marine creatures such as Dolphins and Turtles. 

The Sanctuary started in the winter of 1958 when a baby seal, only a few hours old, was washed up on the beach at St Agnes. Ken Jones lived with his wife Mary just one hundred yards from the beach, he picked up the pup and took it back to his small garden.

For many years he ran a rescue centre for seals and oiled birds, with just one pool, at St Agnes. The news of his work with seals spread, and he received more and more calls about injured seals. Today the Sanctuary has nursery pools, convalescent and resident pools, and a specially designed hospital.

The hospital over the years has been extended to include isolation pools, as well as treatment and preparation areas. The Sanctuary has rescued many seals over the years, and most are well enough to be released back into the wild after treatment, but some seals, for various reasons, would not survive back in the wild, so they have them as guests.
