by_ @hugh_kretschmer Heaven & Earth: For Men's Health Magazine, and a peculiar series of articles that was brought together in a "Death Package". This shot illustrates one article about embracing death as much as life. I've made a lot of clouds before, but this one is my all time favorite. It was also the biggest one I've ever fabricated. Made from foamcore and fiberfill, it was supported by a "C" stand that is behind the model. The set was raised on steel deck about two feet, with a hole for him to stand in. We decorated the set floor with live, overgrown sod, and artificial daisies. A section of vintage fencing was placed at the back to help bridge the foreground and hand painted backdrop. My assistant was off camera blowing water through the hose during shooting, his face all puffed out and bright red. It was hilarious to watch. Much to his relief, he had to stop a few times so we could mop up the large pools of water that would collect under the set. We soon realized we had to raise the strobe packs off the floor, YIKES! We used a three light setup, with a medium octobank as the key, 60" white umbrella for fill, and a small strip-bank for a slight rim light on key light side. Although I love this cloud, the best prop find was the bright gold bible. I FINALLY got the chance to work with Creative Director, Darhil Crooks, from The Atlantic magazine, on this article with the working title, Financial Shame, written by Neal Gabler.  When the article was originally pitched to me, Darhil’s approach was to spin the visuals in the direction of “financial impotence”, as was a key point picked up from Mr. Gabler’s text.  You can imagine some of the ideas we came up with around that central theme.  (The next few email exchanges between Darhil and I were pretty funny.)  But, when my first round of sketches were brought to the editor’s attention, concern of loosing the real message gave way to a more encompassing angle, “shame”. 

Darhil’s brilliant idea of using a paper bag with a sad face drawn on it was poignant and spot on, especially given Mr. Gabler’s personal accounts that triggered his own financial shame shared in his text.  When Darhil mentioned a family dog with its own sad face bag on its head, I was hooked.
