Ensley bent over the plate. She had done the best she could without having to use the stove-not an easy feat but she'd done it. She was tempted to taste test, but she didn't want to steal food from Reidunn. She'd come over last night at the request of a sniffling Reidunn, and she'd spent the night at her bedside. She could have left, but she wasn't going to leave her girlfriend alone with a cold, which she had assumed was the problem. She didn't make a habit of staying over with people; it complicated things. Soon you spend so much time with them you begin to miss them when they aren't there, and then you've got a whole different mess. But she couldn't bring herself to leave Reidunn's side, her mind conjuring a vision of her needing Ensley and finding herself alone.
Ensley picked up the plate, softly entering Reidunn's room again to find her already awake, staring at the ceiling.
"Knock knock. Breakfast." Reidunn looked at her, eyes wide. Ensley had made it clear before her feelings on staying with people overnight, and the pair was equally surprised she was still here.
"You stayed?" Reidunn's voice was coarse, and Ensley helped her to sit up, handing her the plate of room temperature and yet hopefully still good food. She didn't find her voice for a moment, cheeks flaming.
"Well of course I stayed. You're here, where else would I be?" She muttered, putting more attention than was necessary on straightening Reidunn's blankets. When she did look up, she found Reidunn watching her with a sort of affection smugness. "Don't look at me like that. Eat up."
She stood, kissing Reidunn's forehead and turning to leave. Reidunn caught her hand, worried eyes trained on Ensley.
"I'm just going to clean your kitchen dearest. I promise I'll come back." Her promise seemed to relieve the huldra's anxieties, and she soon had her hand back.
It's complicated now. Ensley's head was pounding in time with her heart. She thought of the affection Reidunn looked at her with. Perhaps complicated wasn't always bad.
Forgive me if the formatting is weird, I've never used mobile before ;-; I don't think it's too long but lemme know if you guys think it needs to be under a cut.
18. A kiss for encouragement
"I can't do this. I really can't Reidunn," Ensley shook her hands, trying to loosen them up. As it was it felt like they were locked in their clenched position. This should be easy. Walk up to someone, say you wrote a story and it's good and you'd like to sell it to people. The thought of doing even that made her feel lightheaded. "It's not too late to change my mind. Let's go back to bed, it isn't that important."
Reidunn huffed, shaking a stray piece of hair out of her eyes as she did. "Ensley, you've put this off for weeks. I'll even come with you, let's go."
"It's alright, I'll do it another time," When she was ready. When the thought of failing didn't weigh on her like your cat lays on your intestines when it steps on you in the middle of the night.
"Ensley," Reidunn caught her cheeks between her palms, bringing the spinning in Ensley's mind to a screaming halt. "I've read it. It's good. Others will like it too." She pressed her lips to hers for a moment of peace Ensley immediately decided was too short. "You got this."
Ensley smiled-she couldn't help it around Reidunn-and nodded. "Okay, yeah...for another kiss I'll go."

Ensley grinned, her own streak of causing trouble outweighed only by Reidunn's. They could get away with it...if they were quick. But kisses were rarely quick with these two.
"What if I don't want to?"
Reidunn snorted, having long since learned to call Ensley's bluff, they both knew she'd wanted a kiss all night. She stole a glance over her shoulder, checking that no eyes were on the pair. She tangled her fingers in Reidunn's hair and smiled into kissing her.

Lydik and Via: coaxed her to bed, and eventually falling asleep, always playing with Reidunn’s hair or holding her hand. She never thought much of it, sinking into comfortable thoughtlessness on the matter. Tonight, though, when she closed her eyes they refused to stay, slipping open to sneak glances at Reidunn. Her hair, her features, the rise and fall of her chest proving she was still here. She realized just how much this little routine meant to her. What would she do if she didn’t have Reidunn next to her, an arm’s reach away? Did she know what it meant to Ensley to have her there? Tentatively, she reached with her free hand to lightly squeeze Reidunn’s shoulder, in case she’d fallen asleep.
Via rubbed a leaf between their thumb and forefinger, unusually engrossed in the plant. They rolled their lip between their teeth, pretending to be thinking very hard about something, although they doubted Lydik was scrutinizing her actions by that much. He was off in his own world, as he often was, something that always made him so easy to be around. There wasn’t any pressure to babysit him, he’d be just as fine doing his own thing near them as he would involved in an active conversation. His nature failed to put them at ease today however. They weren’t the most eloquent, flowery words didn’t just come out of their mouth (then again they didn’t come out of his either), but they couldn’t awkwardly mumble their way at this one. They needed to be upfront and clear about their meaning.
“Lydik.” Their voice faltered at the end, grabbing his attention, and they cleared their throat before continuing. “I really like you. As more than a friend.” Their face hadn’t ever felt this warm it seemed, and they managed to pull their head up to look at him, trying to at least maintain a shred of dignity. “I think I could even fall in love with you...”
Reidunn and Ensley:
“Dunnaaa I’m almost done.” Ensley whined, feeling Reidunn tug on her arm insistently.
“Noo ma’am. It’s too late, finish tomorrow. You need sleep.” She was right of course. Ensley hadn’t slept well the night before, and she’d never admit it but her lids were beginning to feel heavy. She let her girlfriend drag her to bed, complaining all the while, eventually shushing when the two had settled under the blankets. Silently, she twirled a strand of Reidunn’s hair around her finger. It was a routine she was used to, staying up too late until Reidunn scolded coaxed her to bed, and eventually falling asleep, always playing with Reidunn’s hair or holding her hand.
