re your follow up on the shallowness of yok's piece on dan (and coming from someone who doesn't like dan in execution); do you genuinely believe dan lacks love or appreciation for art? i've talked with my friends at length about how dan's graffiti is never really used to communicate with like minded people and fails to send as much of a message as white's social media posting, but i did feel like he cared for the medium as a whole considering he has a whole conversation mourning how he couldn't pursue it academically. for a character who i feel fell flat in terms of police messaging, his relationship with art and the isolating and ineffective nature of his activities were one of the few parts of dan that i enjoyed. (sorry if your ai comment was more joking than serious, it just kind of stood out to me in your analysis orz)
In all honesty it was 100% a joke, but if I actually analyze what I believe his stance on AI based on his political opinions and typical opinions of people who overlap w him - I think he seems like he would at first be an early adopter of AI acceptance but take that back later as he understands it more. I think this guy truly does love and believe in art, like he really does. It’s his optimism/naivety towards art, and of course the NFT stuff, that is really coloring my impression of his attitudes towards tech developments in the art sector.
There is likely a lot of nuance of how attitudes on Bitcoin adjacent stuff work in these circles in Thailand that I’m missing here, and I feel like these are very cultural context heavy, so I can only give my opinion on what I think his opinion would be in western art circle overlap. I’m trying to remember here the opinions of artists wayyyy earlier into the development of this issue.
I think that he would at first consider it a tool can supplement someone’s work and something that could be important for accessibility (crucially not for someone making art only through ai but as like an artist tool), and I mean he wouldn’t care about copyright either. but especially as information about the data centers, the environmental impact, and capitalists using it to push artists out of spaces by trying to automate them would come out, he would change his mind and then oppose it. I think after some time he would come to be really upset by ai stuff. So ultimately, no, his love for art was never in question for me. It’s because of his optimism towards art and proximity to NFTs that I think he would come to view ai from an accessibility tool that artists with less resources can create more ambitious projects, to something that is literally damaging the lives and poisoning the land of the people around him.
