me: *takes a deep breath*
me: I love—
anyone who has spent five seconds around me ever: yes, you love Jemaine Atea Mahana Clement, we know, you love Jemaine so much, he’s the light of your life, you love him so much, you just love Jemaine Clement, we KNOW, you love Jemaine you bleedin’ love Jemaine ok we know, we get it, YOU LOVE JEMAINE. WE GET IT.
It’s this idea of ice cream flavors where everybody is eating strawberry ice cream. We’re not saying strawberry ice cream sucks, but that there’s room for other flavors. We’re also not saying we don’t like strawberry ice cream, we only like vanilla or chocolate. There’s really this thing where dance music has gotten so big, but it cannot crash pop music so it became pop music. It took one direction, and that direction became that single flavor. It’s really important that we contain different flavors on the dance floor. It’s not about saying that flavor is not good; the thing that’s not good is that there’s only one [flavor] and that no one, especially the musicians, are questioning that.
Thomas Bangalter, “VIBE Summer 2013: Pharrell And Daft Punk”, VIBE, Sarah Polonsky, Aug. 14, 2013
Reposting this because apparently, Thomas’ a “legend at... ice cream consumption”, which just makes this quote even greater.
You know, Jemaine, recently, I've, uh, I've been—I've been thinking about love, about mutual love, that sort of love where two... y'know, two people, they love each other equally, like the love you have with, you know, with a loved one, and it's an equal love, and you give love equally, and it's—it's a, it's a feeling that's... it's amazing, it's a sorta... it's probably—you know, it's a wonderful thing. It's love at its best. It's love, y'know, it's, it's, uh, it's, y'know, it's probably the strongest adhesive available.
“Pencils in the Wind” — Flight of the Conchords
okay, so some of the commenters on the official YT upload of the demo for “Shiny” are saying that LMM should have played Tamatoa in the movie
and my initial, selfish reaction was something like “no, absolutely not, get out of my house, how dare you insult one of my long-time faves even backhandedly sortez sortez sortez”, b/c I’ve been a huge Jemaine stan since I was, like, 13
but like, even barring that bias
you’re saying that an actual Māori man (who has done previous theatric works about Māui, no less) should have been dropped from a movie about Māui and Pacific Islanders
just because you liked the demo version of a song
that might not be what you’re saying outright, but it’s an ideal underscored by your rhetoric.
from an purely objective standpoint, the final version is no worse than the demo. personal tastes may vary, but ultimately, the song in the movie is at least just as good as the demo.
why, then, can’t we just let a Māori man play a fictional crab in a movie that leans heavily on his culture (and other Polynesian cultures) without petitioning for a retroactive version that doesn’t feature him?
