Why not? You should. If you don't I can't! Have children!
I have been told many times throughout my life that I must have children. I have been bullied, interrogated, argued with, and accused taking away the rights of others have children. None of these arguments have been about about abortion or whether or not a preterm baby is alive and neither is this post. This is about becoming a parent, why I will not, and that it is okay.
I am not selfish for not having children. I have chosen not to have children because I care about them, I care about others, I don't need children, and someone else will do it.
Most people will have children so I do not have to. I do not need children to make me complete. I am very happy without them. My fulfillment comes from friendship, work, art, philosophy, science, and adventure. These are the thing I love and I would take them over becoming a parent any day.
I cannot insure a good future for my children, I cannot take proper care of them because I suffer from mental illness. I refuse to become a child abuser to satisfy society.
I will not increase the world population any further, I will not make someone else starve so my DNA can be passed on. Instead I put those resources into others who are already alive.
I'm not taking away anyone's right to have children by choosing not to have them. In fact I am helping by making room in the population for those who cannot live without children to have them.
Only the most dedicated people should become parents. Taking responsibility for someone else's life is very serious. It cannot be undertaken lightly. I do not pass the test. I do not have the desire. Something in my biology and my psychology says "no." Perhaps like a cell that chooses apoptosis to save the organism of which it is a part I know reproduction would be a mistake. I yield to reason and my nature. I am a good enough parent to say "no."
