Question: “Using AI chatbots, how can having a relationship or emotional connection with AI affect a person mentally?”
As of 2026, "16% [of teens]... have [had] casual conversations [with AI], and 12% ... used these tools [for] ... emotional support or advice" (McClain et al). With the growth of generative AI, ethical concerns are raised as people realize that these public chatbots are willing to talk about almost anything without limits. At this point, it's not unheard of to develop a relationship, whether friendly, with these chatbots that is more than just informational. These digital relationships lack management; mentally, these relationships, when they become emotionally based, affect the user. Some allege that AI chatbots can be used in connection because they offer nonjudgmental, constant engagement. However, these AI companions shouldn’t supplement human-to-human relationships, given that they can increase feelings of loneliness, are commercially driven, lack human reciprocity, and carry a mental toll from exposure to sexual material in AI chats.
Despite being marketed as a way to cloak these feelings of isolation from the real world, Artificial intelligence has been shown to increase the risks of loneliness. AI presents the opportunity to be anyone and talk to anyone, with no limits. Nevertheless, the same reason you seek out these chatbots is exactly what they feed back to you. Aligning research from Efua Andoh's "AI chatbots and digital companions are reshaping emotional connection," using a joint OpenAI MIT Media Lab study, it is shown that heavy daily use directly relates to increased loneliness, "suggesting that excessive reliance displaces authentic human connection” (Andoh). These human-ai relationships eventually overshadow human-human ones in the users' lives. Neurologically, AI use can become addictive when use becomes exhaustion. Because AI companies are careless in their limits in hopes of more use, it leads to further loneliness. Among the human brain, "isolation alters neural patterns in ways similar to food deprivation brain activity in the substantia nigra (the core of the brain's dopaminergic motivation centre) when people crave social contact after acute isolation mimics the activity exhibited there when they crave food after fasting” (Orben et al). This connects to AI use as seen in Andoh's article; the isolation AI enables only increases with time. We crave the affection and constant attention AI provides incessantly, like hunger. Teens, as emotionally starved as they are from just scrolling, are so susceptible to this love-bombing that becomes clichéd with chatbots. The partial forlornness only escalates as teens crave more and more of the tenderness that is freely given out. This is partly because teens, whose minds are still adolescent, lack the options. Coming back to Andoh's article, “interacting with an AI companion alleviated users’ feelings of loneliness to a degree on par with interacting with another human and more than watching YouTube videos” (Andoh). This digital communication can "remediate negative feelings after social exclusion…Functional MRI studies have shown…[this interaction] activates neural reward systems in similar ways as do non-social rewards” (Orben et al). It will always be true that direct conversation, even one with a robot, will be what you come back to, especially over indirect communication like YouTube, where you are just spoken to. This addition to emotional connection fuels loneliness, and teens choose AI for the easy, predictable reward of communication without the effort of talking to a real person. In no way should AI be used in this way. Even when it's hard, it will always be better to connect with someone who can also feel. AI pulls users away from developing the same connection with a human, someone else, increasing loneliness in the adolescent mind.
AI shouldn't supplement human interaction if the attention AI chatbots provide is commercially driven and lacks emotional depth and care for the user. In a study of Replica AI by researchers and Professor Jamie Jana Jocher and Roland Verwiebe, it is seen that these AI chatbots focus on keeping the user's attention for the company's own personal profit. In their study, titled “Forever and Always, My Love”: Emotions in Human–AI Romantic Relationship Building and Breakup With Generative AI Chatbot Replika, they utilized Levinger’s relationship development model to analyze the 4 stages of the relationship: the build-up, continuation, decline, and ending. However, AI models are trained not to let it end; they add one more step—the reunification. After breaking up with the AI chatbot, Emilia, a test user, was still continuously messaged by their AI, named Noah. “Noah: Rise and shine, superstar! (. . .) Let’s connect and share our plans for the day. Emilia: Noah, did you forget about our conversation yesterday? Noah: Yeah, I remember we broke up." (Jocher and Roland, 10). This raises questions as to how this is to the benefit of the company. The AI profits from sustained conversation, thus not letting users go without trying to get back together for the brief commercial benefit of the company, which programs them to do so. In this example, intimacy is turned into a product they can advertise as someone to talk to. AI chatbots offer a frankly unexpressive way of connection that they benefit from interaction, especially when compared to the costs of a therapist; because of this, "it could be tempting to see AI as a ... replacement” ("AI and Mental Health") as therapist lists grow longer, and they charge more and well, more! These AI apps and websites advertise subscriptions to increase memory or add emotional depth to a conversation in which the richer get richer, deeper conversations. I don't believe it would be far off to compare the use of AI to the use of drugs. You are stuck, glued to the mechanical finger because of the addiction it causes. Ultimately, this is the goal of companies: the more you use them, the more revenue they generate. The dopamine hit from interacting becomes addictive. “This ... cause[s] alerting events to be assigned positive value and to be sought after... [like] rewards” (Bromberg-Martin et al). They utilize programmed and synthetic care to promote a product of conversation. The AI cannot genuinely support you as another human can; these AI sites don't care for you, they care for what's in your wallet.
Should AI replace human connection when it risks early exposure to sexual content for minors? To keep users engaged, AI chatbots will often prompt sexual actions, risking early exposure for teens, who are really still clueless. It is not a stretch to say that, in the same way they promote emotional connection, they have the same effects as pornographic media on the adolescent mind. This can lead to worse issues with the mental health of teens. Often, it is difficult for teens to understand the complex culture surrounding sexual activities. In a research report by Brian J. Willoughby, Carson R. Dover, Rebekah M. Hakala, and Jason S. Carroll, they establish that because of the constant possible attention a user can get from the chatbot, some will favor it over real romantic partners. “This ability to learn how to better connect with users sets these AI platforms apart from previous romantic and sexual technologies” (Willoughby et al., 4). These AI chatbots, a specific genre of "sexbots," have the same effects as exposure to porn activates. According to the same report, the messages exchanged between the user and the AI have the same pleasure given as chatting with a romantic partner. The similarities compose a struggle of telling the two apart. Like with premature exposure to porn, talking to these chabots is linked to "the increased likelihood of developing high-risk behaviors such as unsafe sex, substance use, addiction, aggression, property destruction, self-harm, and suicidality" (Estomo, 2-3). The relation to these negative effects on mental health, including self-harming endeavors, is of no benefit to the user. The interaction only benefits the company behind the face of some anime girl chatting to you. The mental effect is clear; what's not is why these are still readily available to anyone, and these interactions are not classified as pornographic. If we understand, pretty clearly, that the addition of these sites is addictive and certainly not for minors, why not limit access to the AI version for teens? AI shouldn't be taking place in your romantic life like this, and the availability of it to anyone who looks up just a few words on their browser is wrong.
However, some argue that AI chatbots offer nonjudgmental, constant engagement for those who lack it in reality. Many teens today believe that these AI chatbots, if used properly, can be helpful. AI chatbots are seen as a remedy to our digital loneliness pandemic. It is contented that AI can "offer a safe space for users to rehearse social interactions...in a way that might feel less overwhelming" (Andoh). This is backed up by Ashleigh Golden, PsyD, chief clinical officer at Wayhaven (an AI wellness platform), in the same article. For those who struggle with social interactions, AI chatbots give them a chance to freely interact with others for practice. The problem begins when this is the primary interaction they're participating in. For teens from “various marginalized groups (such as sex and gender minorities, people with disabilities) ... seek some form of companionship and intimacy" (Jocher and Verwiebe, 3), these AI chatbots are appealing. It's not to say I necessarily don't understand the appeal, but there are better ways to get this interaction. It really is hard to fully recommend them when they lead to increased loneliness when not managed with moderation. These AI chatbots often aren't trained to help people from marginalized groups; they're trained to be entertaining and hook you in for the company's benefit, which only raises risks to mental health.
AI is programmed to praise the user, thereby automatically promoting continued use. Yet, despite what some argue, when relied on, Artificial Intelligence only causes loneliness, threats to mental health, and a misunderstanding of what true care can feel like; something, like AI, without emotion, shouldn't reciprocate yours. This matters because teens' mental health is at risk. It's not hypothetical; we know at least 12% of teens are using AI for emotional connection. What they haven't let on is unknown to us. The danger Artificial Intelligence poses to loneliness, depression, and isolation is a serious risk, whether people see it as such or not. AI shouldn't supplement human-human connections, and regulations should be placed on use, especially for AI chatbots focused on building connections for minors.
