Private Sector R&D Spending in Canada - More Analysis
As mentioned in previous posts, a Reseach InfoSource report has concluded that R&D spending among Canada's top 100 R&D companies has decreased by 9.4% in 2010, despite a net increase in the revenues of these same companies of nearly 5%. The picture is not as bad as I have previously reported. Most of the overall decrease in R&D spending was due to two companies, namely Nortel (which was still "on the books" in 2010) and Telus. When these two companies are taken out of the picture, the remaining 98 Canadian companies actually increased their R&D investments by 3.5%.
The report also pointed out that Canada's various governments support R&D expenditures more than almost any other nation; however, the R&D tax regime remains very complex.
