The Colour of Memory, Pierre Bonnard Exhibition, Tate Modern. February 2019
Pierre Bonnard was a post-impressionist painter living in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of his subjects were everyday, homely scenes and were usually painted from memory using sketches as guides - a great believer in research through practice.
I am just beginning to understand what it is to paint. A painter should have two lives, one in which to learn, and one in which to practise his art. Bonnard
I love that he painted from memory, giving his paintings a wonky perspective that makes me feel better about my own drawings. His colours are of the kind I would like to wear as dresses. And to wear those dresses in the landscapes he painted: sun-drenched, peaceful, always mealtime.
