The freshman class at most LACs is around 500 students, so you’ll have a pretty small group of people on campus--which can be good or bad depending on the person--I personally like a smaller school.

Research universities are better for a broader, more inclusive experience. You will probably not get as much attention or special care as you would at a LAC but you will have a lot more opportunities. Your class sizes will be bigger but you’ll meet a lot of new people that you probably wouldn’t have met at LACs. There’s also lots of research opportunities.

To answer your other question, I think you can do research at LACs but it isn’t as convenient or common as it would be at a research school. If you’re interested in LACs I’d apply to a mix of LACs and research schools so you have options and aren’t confined to just one!
