it didn’t take long for parker to catch on— the way you couldn’t stop smiling, the unguarded position you carried yourself in, the lack of looking over your shoulder in case you had to turn the other way.
it was different.
“so, you gonna tell me what happened?” parker lifted her face from her phone, she’d been occupied herself, but never too occupied for you.
you shook your head with a small laugh, brushing off her curiosity. “no it’s nothing, i just haven't felt so..” you shrugged, “so good.”
parker laughed at your words, thumbs shifting back to her dark screen. “so you did like the party. heard you and josie got into it, didn’t want to bring it up..”
you paused for a second, books almost falling from your hands. “well, we aren’t together. it wasn't me she was touching. she can do who she wants. i guess i’ve been a bit hypocritical,” your voice dropped down to a whisper only you could hear, “a lot,”
to demean josie for being involved with cali didn't work when you and daniela weren't far from the same.
especially as of late.
“anyway, doesn't matter. i’m not really trying to push myself back into things i know i can’t handle. especially when all of this just, like, happened.”
parker nodded in response, “no yea, totally. hey, i better find will. but you have a tutoring sesh, don’t you?”
you stilled, eyes checking the date on your phone— it was, in fact, a monday.
“oh,” you shut your eyes for a moment, “right, it totally slipped my mind.. i’ll see you later?”
she pressed a kiss to your cheek, “always. bye!”
parker headed down the hall, the opposite way you needed to go.
the library was overly quiet, save for a few med students getting their fill before another final. you clicked the door shut, daniela already seated at the desk.
“hi, sorry, we could extend the session i just—”
“extend it? what for?”
you raised a brow, “well it’s been thirty minutes and that’s half your time taken and—”
she cut you off, the paper sliding to the side where you were able to view it.
there sat the assigned worksheets completed, all marked and perfect.
“what’s this,”
daniela smiled, body turning to the side. “your worksheets, and also last weeks midterm. nothing's forged. it’s a perfect score.”
her words were barely registering— you hadn't helped for the longest time and here she was, with a perfect mark, right on the desk where she started on.
“dani, i’m so proud of you. this is amazing really,” you lifted up the midterm, flipping through countless of check marks that lined every page.
daniela’s hand moved the paper down, the girl already standing up. “i was thinking.. we continue what we started the night of the party. i wasn’t quite satisfied, yet.”
oh, so that's why her work was completed.
she was eager.
though was it really an issue when her scores were at the top— all seamless, hundreds like she's figured out a way to press into her professor's keyboard?
“well, you have another midterm so if you finish studying for it, i don’t see why not.”
daniela smiled, taking her place in the soft, cushioned chair she’d claimed as her own, something she thought she’d never be delighted to say.
she flicked her brown hair over her shoulder— always straightened and cooperative, before getting to work.
daniela groaned at the difficulty this module was giving her, the online textbook repeatedly fanning the screen with red pop ups
wrong answer, try again.
and you knew she was losing it slowly, and though you hated to interfere with learning processes, you had to this time, you couldn’t stand watching her for a second more.
that red screen was starting to annoy you too.
you closed the laptop entirely, switching to a paper textbook instead, your fingers turning the flimsy material over to page 62.
“how about we make a deal,”
daniela’s head flew off from the table, “what kind of deal?”
“every right answer, is a kiss.”
daniela’s lips curved upward, “i like that deal. you’re on.”
daniela spent the next hour perfecting her answers, it was like she had woken up.
though she hadn't asked for a kiss yet.
“how many do i have?”
you smiled just barely, “if i’m being honest.. i had lost count half an hour ago.”
daniela closed the textbook— a small dent in the corner to mark page 95.
“so i guess that calls for a make out sesh,”
the sudden switch was messing with your head—daniela avanzini, the girl who hated your guts, wanted nothing more than to press her lips right onto yours.
what a switch.
“well, we did make a deal,”
daniela pulled you onto her lap contently, her hands rubbing the sides of your thighs. she leaned forward, her lips touching yours in a claiming kiss, you didn’t need to be asked twice— your lips mingling with hers until you both were a hot mess.
your phone buzzed twice, and then for a third time. you hadn’t ever gotten notifications as quickly as you had just now. you preferred to be left alone.
daniela tried to work through the noise, her tongue slipping into your mouth with ease, like it was meant to fit.
but then your phone buzzed again, and you were convinced if you didn’t pick it up to check it would fall off the table.
daniela groaned when your lips broke away from hers, the sudden loss already hurting her deeply. your hands flipped over your phone, eyes landing on parker’s notifications.
hey, saw the update.
r u okay?
maybe don’t look. r u free?
u there?
text me asap, hope ur okay.
you tilted your head— the update? you were trying to rack your mind for anything that could be remotely close to what she was talking about without asking her what the hell she was talking about
daniela’s face creased with worry, “you okay?”
you nodded, “i’m okay, give me a second.” your fingers flipped through your apps, before you realized what parker meant.
the update.
spill’d.
you took one breath, bracing yourself for whatever awful rumour you were about to find— no doubt, about you— by the way she reacted you could tell that much.

you stared at the words, they seemed a bit all over the place and you weren’t sure if it was because the screen was starting to get blurry or if you’d suddenly forgotten how to read— either way, both reasons were bad.
dnaiela quickly wiped a falling tear, “hey, hey, talk to me.”
so you were crying.
“it’s stupid. we should probably wrap this up, our time is over with anyway.”
daniela’s brows furrowed before she grabbed her own phone. her eyes widened with shock, scanning over the small screen.
“i'm here if you want to talk”
“i appreciate it,”
you got off of the girl, packing away your things and quietly drifting out of the library.
daniela didn’t even have the words to call you back, to tell you that it didn’t matter, that everything on that app was a stupid way to easily take control by belittling others.

daniela’s jaw tightened at the sudden alert that seemed to weigh her phone down. cali and sloane were snickering at their phones, “is this—”
daniela whipped around, “don’t read that.” her voice was stern, the type of stern that people steered away from.
you either dealt with daniela or you avoided her completely.
there was no in between.
daniela was someone who wouldn’t be played with— not when she could buy your place.
the brunette kept her piercing eyes lined and listening. she was perfect, wholly, except for what really laid behind that picturesque facade.
it was so vile.
“you read it out loud when they announced that justin gave me an std.” cali quipped, heart racing at her sudden talk.
the chuckle that seeped out of daniela was dangerous, “because it was true. you know cali, the real difference between me and you is that you’re a whore,” her manicured finger pointed toward the redhead, silver ring wrapped around with subtlety despite being more than all their tuition money combined. “i’m not,” she finished, cali’s mouth opening. “well—” sloane cut her off, “just drop it cal, she’s right and you know it.”
daniela’s hand settled onto her hip, “god, sloane, that’s the smartest thing you’ve said all month.”
sloane opened her mouth— if she could describe daniela avanzini in one word she’d say terrifying but what she would really mean is shallow. her mouth closed.
“i’ll see you two later,” she blew kisses and stumbled into the lecture hall, completely empty save for the professor and well.. you
“daniela,” the professor spoke, her brow raised in disappointment. “it would’ve been ideal for you to show up—” she checked the time on her watch, “—right, an hour ago.”
she descended down the steps, “oh my god,” she pouted, “i’m so sorry, but you know how it is.. had to adjust my clothes and all so i can show up presentable and not like..” her eyes racked over you, there was something very specific and cruel in why she hated you.
and it was because you were everything she wasn’t.
“.. that.”
you wouldn’t be surprised if your eyes stayed stuck in the position you always had them in when daniela parted her lips— rolled back.
“yea, see. i’m not doing this.” you leaned forward, hand wrapping around the strap of your bag.
“doing what?”
the professor pinched the bridge of her nose, “daniela you’re failing my class in case you’ve forgotten. which i would find very hard to believe considering the fact that you brought it up to me in tears. you two either work something out or you fail the required course and stay an extra semester.”
she swallowed hard, there was something humbling to her about not being able to finish in required time— not that there was anything wrong, daniela was just severely lacking in many areas.
“i’ll.. i’ll call my dad and—”
you cut her panicked voice off, “and what? get her fired?” you stood up with a small push, “you know, avanzini, for someone with everything in the world, you have nothing at all. we’ll meet on my terms, my number is on the back of this sheet. familiarize yourself with these terms and then come and see me.” you slid the key concepts across the wooden desk. “thank you dr. rachel, we can talk later.”
she paused for a moment, “y/n.” her voice was different when it wasn’t lecturing, softer. “don’t burn yourself out.”
you nodded politely, but to be completely honest it was too late for that.
three years late.
daniela ran after you, clearly unimpressed with the sheet of paper.
“can’t you do this digitally? i don’t carry around paper.”
you spun on your heels, “i don’t care about what you prefer. in case it hasn’t clicked yet, you’re doing this my way. so take your head out of your ass and familiarize yourself.”
embarrassed, she kissed her teeth, “remember who’s here on a scholarship.” she inched in closer, “because it’s not me.”
if there was one thing she held over you, it was her status.
the only divide was the power she held because her father was the mayor.
an exploitative one at that. yet you doubted she knew about his dirty way to make money.
“make sure you have notes written out by tomorrow.”
daniela squinted at the concepts. orientalism. post colonialism. what the fuck was this.
gavin smirked alongside her, “studying on the go now?”
the groan that left her lips was very chaotic.
“some stupid thing i have to do.”
he chuckled, “anyway, patrick pierre is having a party. wanna go?”
she grimaced, “that’s reputational suicide i would rather find my hermès completely ruined than be seen anywhere near patrick’s house.”
“but babe—”
she put a finger up to his mouth, “and i’m surprised you even asked me that. were you really considering going?”
“no.”
she hummed, taking her lipgloss out and reapplying as she looked into her phone camera, “don’t make me regret this. regret you.”
“what’s got you sooo down babe?” parker nudged your shoulder, leaning into you as she spoke with her hands. “you have so much going for you.. because i signed you up for an open acting class..!”
“parker!”
“it was mandatory and they told me to bring a plus one. at least it’s not pilates.”
you groaned into your hands— out of every possible thing that could be remotely worse than daniela avanzini, an acting class didn’t fit into any list.
fortunately for parker
she raised a brow, “i refuse to accept that an acting class has you this down, what’s going on?” she straightened up, parker was very serious when she wanted to be.
“i agreed to it and all but i don’t know.. i just really need this class to be higher than the others and she’d be a great reference so tutoring really isn’t that bad but it’s with—”
daniela’s laugh cut you off completely, “she thought he’d go back to her? oh my god. what a desperate bitch.”
parker looked between you two, a scandalized gasp left her lips. “no fucking way.”
“yes way. un-fucking-fortunately.”
“daniela avanzini, huh,” she giggled unapologetically, “lesson one, learn how to not depend on daddy.”

parker muted the notification, lips twisting into a sad half smile as your eyes scanned the screen.
“who’s even behind this? like yes, sure.. it’s interesting and i get why they have it out for daniela. we all do. but they didn’t have to drag me into it.. guy or not.” she turned to face you, “i don’t even care about it like that. if it happens, it happens. and though i don’t like her i can agree that, yes, she’s very attractive and quite frankly i wouldn’t blame them for wanting her either. but to publicly put me on blast for no reason?” her arms folded over her chest— their usual position— but now carrying something heavier.
parker had been your friend since the very first day you walked into the wrong class seven years back. the first day of high school held a lot more nerves than anything else ever did.
you could perform in front of a stage with millions and not feel a thing. but walking into a building full of emotional teenagers? you couldn’t think of anything worse.
stumbling into the ‘basics of mathematics’ and not ‘understanding the latin language’ was the best mistake of your life.
your only mistake.
you tucked your phone away, “that app is stupid. i don’t know why we still entertain it. they don't know anything about you okay, and what they say doesn’t matter.”
will faltered when he spotted parker, “hey you two.”
parker sat up straighter, “hi. hey.”
you nodded in acknowledgment, grabbing a book and letting her have her moment.
it started small, they were in the same elective class and talked about how the professor was more interested in romcom movies than economics.
the only thing you really thought was absurd was that economics was their preferred elective. you loved her but sometimes you questioned what went on inside her head
“look i saw the post thing and i just wanted to tell you to not let it get to your head. people talk and you don’t have to explain anything. don’t feel embarrassed,” his voice dipped lower, “and i’ve never looked at daniela in that way.” he slipped a page of notes onto her lap.
“figured you wouldn’t be able to think much with this being so in your face right now so you can copy down mine. i’ll see you later.”
she swallowed hard, hands holding the paper. “yea! later!”
she groaned and sat back, “oh my god,”
your giggle was enough to get her smiling again, “you know, for someone who attends open acting classes for fun, in front of complete strangers, you sure seem to freeze up off the stage.”
she elbowed you playfully, “we are not spending time analyzing me, thank you very much and—” she trailed off, eyes landing on a girl holding a helmet.
parker’s eyes flickered to the book you were reading, “i love this book, majorly. why don’t you tell me your favourite part??”
but you noticed. of course you had.
you exhaled a soft laugh, “what? what're you looking at?”
your head turned, “y/n—”
josie.
that’s who she hadn’t wanted you to see.
her denim shorts rode up her thighs, black top hugging her easily, black biker helmet held against her hip.
perfect.
“i thought she went somewhere else,” you muttered, eyes on the book you'd lost all interest in.
“i think that’s what everyone thought.” parker spoke softly, “hey, look.. it’s fine, she could be visiting.”
yea, visiting.
both of your heads turn when you hear daniela’s voice in the distance, “cali i swear to god! if you don’t mute that fucking app i’ll delete it off your phone!”
“but someone heard us talking yesterday! what if they heard about..”
“has it ever occurred to you that you're just fucking loud? maybe if you'd just shut the fuck up, we wouldn’t have spill’d all up on our ass. kay?”
you raised a brow as parker grimaced, “what did shakespeare say? heaven truly knows that thou art false as hell?”
you both leaned into each other as you laughed, “ugh, pray for me. i might not be here to see you and will get together,” your hand rested over your heart and parker rolled her eyes.
“you're so dramatic, we’re going to be late.”
“me? you're the acting major!”
daniela stood in the library, eyes settling on yours as you scrolled uninterestingly at your phone.
the click of the door caught your attention, clearly unimpressed.
daniela lived like the world revolved around her, like every little thing she did caused a major impact in a world entirely larger than her presence.
but what were you expecting? she’s entitled, rich, and can buy her way through her problems.
except this one.
“i was only thirty minutes late. don’t look at me like that.”
“only? you aren’t supposed to be late at all.”
you crossed out a concept on the sheet, daniela’s eyes widening.
“what are you doing? we didn’t do that one. we never even covered—”
“avanzini, calm the fuck down. if you'd come earlier, we would’ve covered it. you want to waste my time? i’ll waste yours.”
she smirked, “maybe because nobody wants to hear you drone on about topics that'll be completely forgotten about after earning a degree. i don't know about you but realistically, who cares about instrumentalization..”
you let out a small laugh, shaking your head as you pulled out a textbook. “your dad sure does. and earning is such an interesting word, don’t you think?” the book slammed onto the table.
“you haven't earned anything avanzini, not yet.”
another book, her eyes blinked, it looked about 700 pages and she wasn’t reading all of that— ever. “and,” another book slammed down. “if you don’t want to hear me,” three more books, the pile building high.
“drone on.” you smiled, another heavy textbook.
“you can take these home and read them all by next week instead, we both say the same things.”
her mouth opened, “i don’t read books,”
“i can tell.”
her eyes narrowed, she didn’t like being challenged.
“fine. talk.”
you pulled out a chair, arms crossed. “there’s a few things we need to go over. terms and conditions if you will.”
you leaned in closer, “absolutely no cheating. at all. i will absolutely not be associated with academic dishonesty. ever. so lose that habit and lose it quickly. you will not sit with me for weeks just to ‘earn’ a fake grade. kay?” you repeated her, daniela scoffing. “deal. next.”
“you prioritize these sessions like you prioritize using your black card. i don’t need you coming late like that again, and if you do. that’s one less concept.”
her gaze sharpened, “fine. next.”
“don’t act up. remember you're the one who needs me. i don’t need shit from you avanzini, let that sit. you need this grade. you need a tutor. don’t get smart with me.”
daniela turned to face you, “what even is post colonialism?”
your lips curved upward, “well..”
you put the books back, the two hour mark had passed by a while ago.
“hopefully you can take that and you know, make use of it. you're not stupid daniela, you're just discouraged.”
she didn’t say anything, her phone resting on her lap as she chewed on the insides of her cheeks. daniela had listened, surprisingly, but all she could think about was parker and what that app said.
she knew you two were close, she didn’t want her name to be dragged— though it almost always was— and parker hadn't done anything to her, not really.
and because you were doing something to help her, even if she resented you immensely, she at least— very rarely— had the decency to clear things up.
she typed out a message
‘it’s dani, the spill’d thing is dumb i have a bf…’
deleted.
‘parker i don’t want him’
deleted.
‘i’m sorry?’
deleted.
until she hadn't put anything at all.
but that’s not what your eyes were stuck on.
parker.
the contact name that stood at the top.
the one she thought you hadn’t seen.
and it would’ve been fine, normal actually. despite her apology— that was a bit out of character for her.
you wouldn’t have questioned it. that was...
if parker actually gave her number out to people. she stuck to socials. always.
parker only gave it out to family, you, will, and…
so how did daniela avanzini have her number and why was it saved?

“i’ll see you tonight!”
you pushed past the crowd of people, the party was tonight and initially, you weren't going to leave your house.
but parker was going with will and decided to drag you along, unfortunately.
it wasn’t that you despised parties but if you had to choose between a party full of sweaty bodies and sticky alcohol or your soft linen sheets, you'd choose the latter.
luckily josie pulled you outside and took you out on her bike and in all honesty, it was the best time you'd had in a while.
you knew she’d be there too, at least that’s what she’d told you and a part of you was excited to have her there when you knew parker would probably be near will the entire night— not that you blamed her, he seemed like a very nice guy— but that left you alone, to an extent.
time seemed to pass very quickly when you spent it pacing your room to try and figure out what to say. you and josie had kissed. things were said. but to get back together? that was a whole other thing that seemed far more complicated than it had to be and you kept pushing the topic away like it was toxic— and, perhaps it was.
parker nudged you as she drove, “what’s got you so deep in thought?”
you turned away from the window, “parties aren't really my thing, i guess.”
parker smiled, her hand moving to your arm while her eyes kept on the road, “thank you for coming with me, i’ll make it up to you.”
a playful smile crawled onto your face, “i don’t need anything parker, i’m just not as used to it as you are. i’ll be fine, and it’s only one night.”
she laughed and pulled into a spot, “tell me when you want to leave.”
inside was somehow worse— strobe lights flashing for absolutely no reason, bodies already bumping into each other while they danced poorly, and of course, daniela avanzini.
parker quickly spotted will, her hand never leaving yours as she guided you across the room, “hey!” she called out, the guy turning around with a small smile. “hey, was the drive okay? i could've brought you guys,”
parker brushed him off politely, “it’s okay, we aren’t going to stay too long and we don’t wanna ruin your fun.”
you kept a soft smile plastered on your face but you weren’t really interested in third wheeling, you shifted your weight between your feet, trying to see if josie had arrived.
you got lost in conversation eventually— will talking about how this had been his first house party in a while, parker talking about how her major courses were drowning her, and you trying to add something worth value but trailing off because your mind was elsewhere.
it was across the room.
where daniela avanzini stood tall, drink in hand— her third, you’d subconsciously been counting despite yourself and she looked like she had already been drunk but you couldn’t tell, not really.
you'd never seen daniela at a party, you weren't sure about all the technicalities when it came to the girl.
a hand snaked around your waist, warm breath hovering by your ear “want to get some fresh air?”
her voice sent shivers down your spine. josie. you tapped parker who was fully immersed in whatever she was talking about and she nodded quickly, you wandered away with the girl immediately.
once outside you took a deep breath, an actual one.
“it was getting so stuffy in there i thought you weren’t coming,”
josie smiled, “not coming? no way, if i have an excuse to see you, i’m using it.”
she stood in front of her bike, your laugh wasn't audible for daniela to hear but when she saw you two through the window, she was more than just irritated. she had a pit at the bottom of her stomach that wouldn’t quite go away, her chest coiled tight, the feelings she was dealing with hadn't been this intense in a while and she had no idea why.
well, partially.
you leaned over her bike to show her something, laughing like you always had, shirt riding up as you did so and josie’s eyes all over you in that loving way of hers, because of course, and god daniela was losing it as she watched it all unfold in front of her.
what if you both kissed again?
no.
that wouldn’t ever happen again.
she pulled cali aside, after what she saw, she was definitely not having it. “cali, baby, i need a favour.”
cali tilted her head, “what?”
“see josie over there, across the street?”
cali nodded, “mhm.”
“well she's been talking a lot about you, more so about how she wants to hook up.”
cali gasped, brows furrowed as she watched you both through the window, “is that why people have been avoiding me?? i do remember her saying something about hooking me up…”
daniela blinked twice, “i don’t know, probably. anyway just go and tell her you don’t want to, i mean.. unless you do,”
cali shook her head immediately, “daniela! don’t say that,”
she walked over angrily, daniela hoping it would separate you both.
“josie, i don’t know who you think you are but we will never hook up, so stop telling people that’s what you want and better yet, keep my name out of your mouth. i don’t wanna have sex and never will, and i have like a boyfriend anyway.”
josie raised a brow, laughing awkwardly, “i’m sorry, what?”
your arms folded over your chest, “what’s going on?”
cali rolled her eyes, “she's been trying to hook up with me, i’m not interested,”
josie laughed again— a bit puzzled, “no cali, if you’re talking about what i said i meant i’d hook you up with—”
she stopped abruptly, suddenly very aware of where you were standing and the conflicted look on your face.
would you ever be able to catch a break?
“with??” you added, head tilting.
if josie told you, she wouldn’t be sure you'd ever want to see her again. she was stuck in a spot that had been curated carefully and she knew.
“i mean.. i don’t mean a hook up, i meant like providing you with, uhm.. well,”
you stood impatiently, “sexual favours? free assignments? spit it out,”
josie had chosen. “no yea, my mind is scattered. sexual favours.”
you stood up straighter, “okay then, cool.”
you'd walked away very quickly, arms hugging yourself because it was freezing and you didn’t want to go inside just yet.
but as soon as you saw josie approach— to try to explain literally anything— you'd gone back inside and dipped into the sea of bodies.
a few minutes alone and your mind was reeling.
seriously?
god you were so close to just accepting it all, to getting back together, and now she was throwing herself at cali like you weren't good enough because nothing had occurred.
you didn’t like the feeling that was settling into your stomach and unfortunately for you all you could think about was the look on daniela’s face yesterday. you felt the same thing in the bathroom. the way daniela spoke cruel words but expressed the opposite, almost like her body was accepting the fact she was into something her mind wouldn’t allow.
she wasn’t fooling you.
you cancelled because you'd felt disrespected, you'd left her alone, minded your own business, and reluctantly accepted her help that she had offered, only to have been insulted and completely hurt.
you knew better than to let daniela’s words get to you, to let them sink in and crawl into spaces that tried to convince you of being less than.
you hadn't told parker, because really what was it that you would’ve said?
that you two almost kissed?
that she spewed bullshit when you saw right through her?
that someone like daniela avanzini might like you?
it couldn't have been more irrelevant.
except those didn’t stay thoughts for much longer because she was already at your side, “oh my god, look who made it,”
you rolled your eyes.
great.
daniela grabbed the open bottle, “you drink?” she wasn’t really asking, she was offering a warning before she did something she definitely wasn’t supposed to do.
“and you want to know because..?”
she smiled, eyes staying on yours, like she knew this would alter things. “you either answer or you don’t, but it would make this a lot easier if you did drink.”
you glanced behind her, parker was laughing at something will was saying and your heart warmed.
maybe you’d entertain the girl for longer.
“well—”
a body bumped into yours, liquid spilling onto the carpet, the guy nervously laughing. “sorry, want this to make up for it?” he offered a half empty red cup, the liquid unknown, “i wouldn’t ever take a drink from you,”
daniela smirked, “would you take one from me instead?”
you lifted your brow, “there’s no cup, what are you—”
her hand slid up to cup your jaw, her hold deliberately firm, reminding you she was there. she tilted your head back.
oh. oh.
she smiled at you, mouth hovering right by yours as she stood, her breath smelling of sweet alcohol.
your breath hitched, she was too close, there were too many people here. and your quickening pulse didn’t help, the way it hammered in anticipation was new.
you thought she was going to kiss you.
and you almost leaned in.
“open your mouth for me,” she demanded sternly, your lips parting as she took a sip of the alcohol, confusing you for a moment— just one, because as soon as the bottle was set down she hovered close.
just enough to kiss, transferring the alcohol into your mouth, the warmth swirling inside of it— quick and shocking, her hand gently pushing your jaw to close it, “swallow,”
the warm liquid went down your throat, coating your insides with its familiar buzz, harsh, but welcome.
and she watched you do it, fingers still holding on until you did so, a satisfied hum escaping from her lips.
heat crawled onto your skin, as much as you wanted to hate the girl, it was hard. she knew what she was doing, especially when she did things like that— intimate things.
daniela didn't ask, she kept her fingers lingering longer than they should've been and she kissed her teeth, “come with me,” she whispered, her hand wrapping around your wrist.
“daniela you're drunk,” her hand tightened against your wrist, door pushing open with a slight squeal, “drunk?” she bit onto her lip teasingly, “you don’t know me very well if you think a few drinks have me drunk.”
you paused, her free hand shutting the door behind her, “look, i wanted to apologize. what i said wasn’t right, i was being stupid, scared.. and regardless if we get along or not i shouldn't have been saying any of that,”
alcohol made daniela unguarded, her deepest thoughts slipping out without meaning to.
she let go of your wrist, hand resting by your head— unintentionally blocking you in.
“you're hot, the way you carry yourself is intoxicating and i’m just,” she took a moment, her laugh short and humourless, “i’m just so angry at everything, all the time. i put on this front because i’m afraid to open up about it but recently, i’ve been trying.”
“daniela—”
“stop it, i know.” she continued, “you do things to me that no one else does, and i don’t know what it is and i don’t know why it’s you but ignoring it is hard,”
you weren't sure what happened then, but you couldn’t think much either.
in the dark room, with the dimmest of lights falling through the windows and lighting the features on her face, everything seemed safe if it all stayed there, inside the small room, where light barely shone through.
and in the spur of the moment you leaned in closer, “then don’t,”
she tensed, clearly not expecting you to say that.
what daniela expected was a push at her chest. an annoyed response that left her shattered. something other than whatever it was you were doing.
it took two seconds.
two seconds before daniela avanzini's mouth was on yours— kissing fervently like she finally had gotten something impossible to get. she tasted like recklessness and bad decisions but you didn’t want to pull away, your hands pulling her in closer— an honest move despite everything you'd said, ever.
she smelled of everything sweet and addictive, and kissing her didn’t make it much better. not when your heart beat fast and you didn’t want to pull away, not when she whined against you like she’d been wanting this for years.
daniela broke away to catch her breath, soft pants leaving her mouth as you spoke quietly, “daniela—”
“shh, i know,” her mouth delved back in, kissing you with ardour so strong you were starting to think this was beyond a 'heat of the moment' thing. but you reciprocated with just as much passion as she did, not doing anything to break away.
and there, in the stillness of the room, you kissed daniela avanzini.

going back to your ex when you don't know what they've done? everyone's judging—silently— but still, judging.
if anyone's interested in pounding on their ex, y/n knows how to do it just right
daniela’s nails dug into her palm, the car ride home was the most dreadful thing she’d ever gone through, all she did was replay the way you leaned in just as willingly, the way your eyes fluttered shut on time, the way your lips..
a soft sigh slipped from her own lips, this wasn’t what she wanted.
to dwell on whether she hated you or not wasn’t a thought she ever thought would cross her mind, haunt her thoughts, force her to stare up at her ceiling until she settled that tight feeling coiling in her chest.
why all of a sudden?
she whimpered, releasing her hand, not having noticed it still was digging into the heel of her hand, a rehearsed smile inching its way onto her mouth when gavin whispered something into her ear— something she didn’t care about, not in the slightest. cali had been quieter than usual, she’d noticed this time, and will hadn’t said a word about what happened.
like he couldn’t bring himself to.
she couldn’t either, no, not at all.
“loosen up, it’s fine. she won’t tell anyone.”
daniela snapped out of her racing mind, brow raised at his words, because she knew sloane wouldn’t utter a word, she’d be stupid to.
and daniela didn’t know if she even cared about that protection anymore, the type she always had but never spoke freely about. the type of protection everyone knew she had, because money didn’t matter without power.
and she had both.
“i know, i wasn’t even thinking about that.” she quipped, half annoyed and half exhausted by his input, he hadn’t even tried to stop anything. so much for being useful, he barely stuck up for her.
her eyes lifted once she heard your laughter— that sweet sound she’d learned to listen out for unintentionally, it just happened. never with her, though.
you pushed josie’s shoulder while the girl bit down onto her lip, parker shoved her phone at you two, in extreme urgency— playfully, fun— you were probably getting tired of daniela.
you never smiled like that when you tutored her, when you two talked, when she was around.
gavin’s head lifted, his eyes following daniela’s, the way she looked at you was different. like you’d been perfectly sculpted, flaws blurred, like she’d rather watch you than hurt you.
he’d never seen daniela look at anyone like that.
gavin leaned down, fingers wrapping around her wrist— just to ground her— lips by her ear, “don’t humiliate me,”
it was gentle, nice even, too nice. daniela pulled her arm away, eyes snapping to his, “god gavin, sometimes i can’t stand being around you. what’s your problem? you can’t be mad that i’ve barely touched you, isn’t that what gianna’s for?”
his expression dropped a fraction, “dani we never—”
“never my ass, don’t lie to my face. i’ve seen it.”
he swallowed, head shaking like he was trying to convince himself she was lying, when he knew well enough that she didn’t have to be. “we’re friends.” he quickly replied, trying to speak it into existence like it would work— he wished they were just friends. daniela laughed bitterly, “right so friends make out in the backseat, cool.”
“friends sure as hell don’t look at each other like that,” he gestured toward you, daniela’s breath catching in her throat.
“we’re not friends.”
not even close.
cali shifted uncomfortably, “i think—”
“i’m going to the bathroom,” she moved past a small crowd and pushed through the heavy door, darting straight to one of the sinks, turning the faucet on to hopefully drain out the pounding in her head. this wasn’t her fault, was it?
“you’re lying!” she screamed, looking between the two people she should’ve trusted the most, but here— in the dimly lit room that smelled faintly of tobacco and cologne that was more expensive than her car— she felt unsafe, and so angry. so, so angry.
“i’ve got nothing to lie about,” his voice rung out heftily, his smug expression boiling the blood under her skin.
“she’s twenty five! i’m closer to her age than she is to yours! you don’t get to replace the only woman that actually meant something to us.”
his gaze darkened, “she chose to leave.”
“no, you pushed her out. you made dirty money, you treated her like shit, you wouldn’t let her fucking breathe in this place. and i don’t blame her for walking out. and what? now you’re resorting to someone who hasn’t even gotten her life together? why?”
the woman smiled politely, “sweetheart, listen—”
daniela whipped around, finger pointing right at her, “no, you listen” she took a step forward, “he won’t change for you, you can’t fix him he’s morally fucked. he’ll keep bringing people over, he’ll keep you quiet about every thing, he’ll continue to buy you shiny things just so you could stop talking. you’re nothing more than something easy on the eyes. he needs you for press and for papers and for his flawless image that he strives so hard for”
the girl stumbled back, “that’s not true, it’s different, it’s—”
“real? that’s what the last one said.” she moved closer, “and the one before her,” she pretended to think, “and the one before that one,”
she spun back around to face her father, “you two aren’t getting married, i’m not going to sit here and pretend like that’s—”
the woman froze. daniela’s hand lifted to her cheek to soothe the burning sensation left by his hand.
“keep quiet” he said sternly, pulling a cigar from his pocket.
sloane tilted her head, “but you told me you’d be able to come— look daniela, i really don’t think i could handle it alone and it would be easier if you could just stick to your promise and—”
“i said no”
“yes, i know.. but if you could just let me explain why it’s so important maybe you’ll change your mind?” she followed after the girl, trying to match her pace.
“sloane i need space, i’m not fucking coming.”
“daniela! you can’t just promise and then back out! that’s not fair—”
she slapped her, eyes widening at the gravity of the situation, her hand retreating instantly. but she didn’t regret it enough to apologize.
“keep quiet”
daniela gasped out, cold water running down her face— water she didn’t remember washing her face with in the first place— her hands grabbed some paper towel to dab it dry. she heard the door open, head ducking back down to watch the running water splash into the bowl.
you took the first sink you saw, the one on the opposite end, hands uncapping the pencil.
you pressed the lipliner to your bottom lip, pausing when you realized it hadn’t been sharpened. you expelled an irritated breath, kneeling down to look through your bag, hands ruffling around but not finding the sharpener you swore you threw in the other day. “fuck,” you whispered, daniela’s head perking up when she recognized your voice, peeking out to see you on the floor.
you stood back up, a quiet gasp leaving from daniela’s lips as she leaned into the sink hands gripping the metal edge, eyes settling onto the mirror.
you pressed it to your lips again, thinking that maybe it could work one more time, but it was no use, the wooden casing already scraping against your lip. daniela peeked again, registering the situation pretty quickly, her fingers reaching into her purse for the sharpener she hadn’t taken out since the tenth grade. “let me help.”
she walked towards you, extending her hand while she looked into your eyes.
you scanned her up and down— no smug expression, no stupid comments, no cali or sloane— just red rimmed eyes, had she just finished crying?
you placed the liner into her open palm, her fingers wrapping around it as she turned the pencil in the sharpener, the space between you two quiet save for the swishing sounds that came from her twisting the pencil. she stepped forward, “part your lips for me,” she whispered, placing the sharpener aside.
you were hesitant, you wanted to tell her that you could do it yourself, that you didn’t owe her anything, that she could fuck off— for good— but you stayed silent, offering your face, lips parting slightly.
your eyes glanced at the mirror, the product sliding to line your bottom lip with sharp precision, daniela’s eyes focused on your lips in the mirror, her eyes meeting yours for a moment. she smiled— quick, kind— before it dropped, like her eyes had, back to your lips.
you two finally turned to face each other, the liner going over your cupid’s bow, daniela paying attention like she was studying the shape of your lips, the ones josie got to feel. “you’re really pretty,”
“what?”
daniela exhaled a quiet laugh, “what? you don’t get told often or something?” she finished lining your lips, the both of you just kind of standing there for a while, no one moving— no one wanting to challenge the silence. no one wanting to ruin it.
she leaned in closer. your eyes fluttered closed. she shut her eyes. you opened yours. daniela’s lips parted, almost closing the gap until you turned your head to the side. “i’m sorry, i.. i can’t, not with you,”
not with you.
daniela dropped her hand, gaze keen on you like she’d finally woken up.
“i’m not into girls, and i’m definitely not into you. i don’t want that kind of thing on me. it’s disgusting. this wasn’t anything— don’t flatter yourself”
you choked down a breath. “you leaned in first” your voice was barely above a whisper, “if you’re not into me as much you claim, then why don’t you just leave me alone?” your hand wrapped around your bag, hoisting it off the floor and back onto your shoulder, your hand pushing the bathroom door open.
daniela dropped to the floor, knees pulled all the way up to her chest with her chin pressed to her knees, she was a liar. she had only been thinking about that for the past week and she’d just ruined it— well, you had pulled away— but she’d ruined it regardless.
it’s disgusting
her own words echoed in her mind, what was she so against, she had no idea. was it because you were everything she wished she was? all she had going for her was money. you had a personality, you were confident, you didn’t care about what others thought, you were actually happy, you had real friends, you didn’t force yourself into societal expectations, you were smart, you had a future ahead of you.
what did she have?
…
it was better like this, wasn’t it? if she had you, she would ruin you. and god, she didn’t want to do that, no, not ever. you were untouched by all the ugly in the world, you were perfect the way you were and she needed to stop.
her phone buzzed quietly, daniela reached into her pocket, rereading the notifcation over and over again

daniela didn’t know what was going on, inside she felt almost.. powerless, like you'd gone and wrung her out of everything she had.
it wasn’t fair— at least to her, that you'd somehow taken control, had grabbed it from her hands and used it against her.
daniela sat at the table you two had practically claimed since the first session, her eyes on the short answers.
“i think i’m done,” her voice was hollow, almost, like she’d forgotten how to ground herself when things were pulling away.
when you were pulling away.
for years she thought hating you would keep you close, keep you from leaving, keep you from pulling away.
it seemed to be doing the opposite as of late, and she was starting to hate that more than she ever hated you.
funnily enough.
you clicked the end of the red pen, eyes scanning over her answers before you paused, pen circling something she wrote.
realistically, it should've been something she knew as you two had gone over it but again, you were here to help not assume
“it’s supposed to be tyranny not dictatorship, but you were really close. they're kind of the same thing. good work,”
the way you said it made her spiral, she moved the paper away from you
“talking to me softly won’t get me to fuck you. like ever. i’m not into.. that.”
what?
you sighed gently, clicking the pen again so it didn’t dry out.
daniela waited a beat. and then two. and then even three because god, what else was she supposed to do?
you took her cruelty for something else now, maybe you pitied her? she couldn’t tell
“what? not going to fight back? no snide remark?”
a polite smile made its way onto your face, “do you have any questions about the content? i could answer some while i’m here.”
she turned to face you fully, eyes sharp. “do you know why josie got kicked out of her other school?”
“daniela, we aren’t doing this today. if you have no questions then we don’t need to continue.”
“this is a question,”
“yes but—”
someone walked by, a little nervously, her hands shuffled by her sides. “when you're done is it alright if we go over derivatives?”
your smile widened, “of course maren, we can—”
“she's busy.” her words weren't kind— well, they weren’t ever kind— but this time they seemed more vile.
maren apologized and quickly hurried off, but you refrained from reacting.
“great, no questions then.”
daniela grabbed onto your wrist, “people like josie aren't really into you, they like the attention though,”
you stiffened ever so slightly, daniela’s face twisting into a smug expression because she noticed, of course she had.
“i’d prefer to keep our sessions strictly about what it’s for rather than my personal life daniela, bud out.”
whatever this was— whatever receiving end she was on— she hated it. immensely. extremely. like she couldn’t grasp being the one shut out.
was this how sloane and cali felt?
daniela’s back straightened, she pushed up from the chair and leaned in a bit closer, just a bit— enough to hear your even breathing. “i don’t like what you have going on, if she ever becomes a distraction, i promise, you won’t be getting out of it lightly. and if you don’t take my sessions seriously, i’ll make sure it hurts you in the long run. watch yourself before i ruin things.”
you swallowed hard.
you could pretend daniela didn’t have any impact on you. you could pretend she was completely irrelevant. you could pretend that she was nothing more than a student you were forced to tutor.
but deep down, where you preferred not to dwell too often, you knew things could get worse if you didn’t tread carefully.
she had money you didn’t have.
she had connections you clearly lacked.
she had control over everyone who crossed her path, and you were lucky if others even remembered your name.
daniela sat back down, “let’s do one more.”
you slid another sheet of paper in front of her, not saying a word, the silence in the air thick and tight, you were afraid to move.
the girl moved her pencil like she always had, jotting things down into sentences that usually were correct.
you looked at the carpeted floor, no expression visible but your heart steadily pounding.
she’d already isolated you from parker.
she’d done it without saying a word.
and though you hated to admit it, being alone was the worst feeling you could ever experience.
you used to handle it with ease, said that it didn’t bother you and provided more comfort than company ever could.
you used to think being alone disciplined you, made you independent with care.
and while it did, it wasn’t fulfilling enough.
because when you walked home, into the house that was always so dark and quiet, being alone started feeling like a punishment.
where the quiet jeered and poked fun at you.
where the silence twisted into something lonelier
because in the room on the left— the one you avoided with caution— where your mom stayed, was what being alone really felt like.
daniela was right, to an extent.
you would always be put second, even in your own home where your mother preferred to bump lines than have a conversation with you.
the worksheet was finished.
daniela already knew it because she’d watched you scribble over things without thinking, mumbling small apologies when you made a mistake with correcting. like your mind had been elsewhere.
“you're good for the test.” the pen slid back into your bag, as well as the folder you carried with the different sheets.
you weren’t in your usual quickened pace. you also weren't being deliberately slow. you were just more so tired, tired and gone
daniela stared up at you with her arms folded across her chest, waiting for you to say something back. anything.
she didn’t like how you were letting her off the hook so easily.
no glare, no scoff, no roll of the eye that always says we’re still playing this game. she clicked her tongue, leaning up again “really? professional, huh? did i finally tame you.”
the only sound that responded back was the zipping of your bag.
“tame me? for what?” your tone was so normal daniela wanted to pull her hair out.
no undertone of annoyance.
nothing but boredom and exhaustion
her smug look dropped a hair, but she didn’t let you see it.
“you're usually more engaged.”
yea, engaged.
you grabbed the strap of your bag, holding it like you'd come to the biggest realization.
and daniela saw it then, the way you'd removed yourself to a place she couldn’t reach.
“i’m just a tutor, i feel like this is as engaged as it can be.”
“you don’t need to be strange about it. you’re treating me like i—”
she paused, like what?
like she realized? like she finally crossed a line? like she needed you..?
you waited until she said something again, a few days ago you would’ve rolled your eyes and commented on how awful she was but now you let the stillness fill the space for you.
daniela narrowed her gaze
oh.
because now things were different.
she tucked in the chair, staying quiet while she did so, her hand coming up to touch the side of your face.
your breath hitched, face turning away from her and daniela stilling, hand dropping in the process.
“did something happen?”
it’s not really a question, her hand gripped the edge of the table, knuckles turning white, she hated that you truly seemed done with her.
“no, our session is over though,” you whispered, small and honest.
you pushed past her, almost nearing the door because really, what else could be said.
daniela scoffed, “you're just going to leave? like that?” she grabbed her phone from the table, “after everything?”
her words slip out as soon as you process them, “i’ll be here at 5 on monday,”
daniela stayed where she was, staring at the walls with a blank expression.
she stood still for minutes on end, waiting for that usual resentment to settle in her chest.
for the ease that follows her when she makes it explicitly clear that she couldn't care less
it never comes.
something else does instead. something worse, harder, something that stings.
and though it took her a while she'd come to recognize that being ignored and called irrelevant wasn’t the most awful thing you could’ve done.

your feet were moving before your mouth could, “you're paying!” josie smiled as she caught up with you, “wouldn’t have it any other way.” she said back, with the same enthusiasm.
it had been exactly a week since you and daniela fought— and a week since you'd seen her at all. she cancelled last session and though you couldn’t admit it out loud you were beyond glad she did.
you were seriously considering pulling out of it yourself, you had long talks in your room and even a pros and cons list which in turn, sounded ridiculous but you needed to visually weigh out factors.
staying in would help you in the long run, the professor's reference would be outstanding on your application and you'd definitely have enough bonus marks to have a high final grade, which was very required.
you weren't cruel either, it's not like you wanted to see daniela fail (except a part of you totally would), you just felt conflicted after everything that had gone down.
was she provoking you because she felt you pulling away? you didn't think so.
was she so insistent on hurting you because you hadn't been intimidated by someone levels above you? possibly.
you weren't exactly sure what it was, maybe she was stressed, but you didn't think so. she could pay to have stress plucked out personally, and she seemed to have more ways than one to destress.. if she chose to do so.
you didn't come with consequences.
that's what she liked.
it had also been a little more than a week since you'd last spoken to parker— if you'd ever speak again.
she was petty. you were petty. breaking the silence wasn’t that easy.
of course you wanted to, you missed her immensely and truthfully no one else could fill in her spot.
josie was good company, but you wouldn’t consider her a friend— not like that anyway.
you two had done not so friendly things, and once that line was crossed, it took a lot in you to even consider someone you'd been so intimate with as a friend.
but now that josie was closer, now that distance faded with schedule issues and much more, it was hard to not want back in, even if you were drowning with other things.
you sat at the same table you usually sat at, food filling the space while you laughed at something josie said.
“to be fair, he's like.. only fifteen.”
“right, i just didn’t know fifteen year old boys were into axe throwing.”
she rolled her eyes playfully, “neither did i. i have a whole bike and he refuses to ride with me. says it'll make him less cool or whatever.”
daniela heard you two before seeing you, her friends were right by the corner. “cali when's that party again?”
“like friday,”
daniela nodded in response, a party wasn’t something shocking, but a lot of people would be there— the word had spread, apparently
“you ever think about why she got kicked out?” sloane crossed her arms over her chest, “who?”
daniela’s head gestured to josie, “her.”
cali shrugged, “i heard she got arrested, something about drug use on campus.”
daniela and sloane raised their brows, clearly unamused.
“what?!” cali huffed, “justin said that—”
“justin says a lot of bullshit.”
sloane looked through her phone, “spill’d probably said something about it somewhere.”
daniela stilled, “why would spill’d know about what happened before josie transferred? that wouldn’t even be our school's gossip app anymore. it would be the whole area's.”
“it knew about me and—” sloane cut herself off, “clearly it talks about things outside of our lecture halls,”
daniela cut in, “yea because you're a student here sloane.”
cali groaned, “whateverrr! can we please go get some food? i’m like really hungry and my legs hurt.”
daniela grabbed onto cali's arm, pulling her in, “you see that table over there? the one a little to the left, right next to will.”
the girl's eyes flicked to the exact spot, her nod following shortly after, “mhmm,”
“sit there.”
daniela let go and cali’s hand shot to her own arm, soothing it. sloane walked with her, no questions but an idea on why daniela wanted that seat, “hey cali, i have something i need to tell you..” her voice drifted out while daniela made her move, walking swiftly, only to stop by your table, hands gripping the back of your chair. “you’re arching your back, are you that desperate?” she whispered into your ear, her voice making you go still.
and despite yourself, you straightened. even though you weren't arching to begin with. “what do you want?”
she exhaled a soft laugh, pulling out a chair and joining the two of you like it was normal. confusion etched onto josie’s face, she didn’t like how daniela always seemed to interrupt your interactions with each other.
“you're talking a little too much for someone who put her hands on me.”
“you hit me first.”
daniela flipped her hair over her shoulder, “you should really go to the gym you're not strong at all. i could've easily hurt you.” her eyes trailed over your body, the way your shirt hugged your chest so perfectly, the way your jeans fit just right, the way your lips parted as you currently stared at her lingering eyes.
daniela looked away, she hated you, that’s what it was.
josie finally decided to cut in, “i’d say she's pretty strong. but you know, you wouldn’t know what it would feel like underneath her, and that's okay daniela. rejection is supposed to hurt.”
daniela’s smile only widened, because she had, in fact, been underneath you.
“god josie you're so right, i mean, i wouldn’t ever want to experience something so.. dirty. gavin and i actually have a lot of fun, unlike whatever happens between you two, with lousy fingering and well, you probably take a while to find her clit if—”
“daniela.” your words were sharp, “if i were you, i’d go check in on my friends because well, they look like they're laughing loads,” you leaned in closer, “and not with you, more like at you.”
the girl's jaw tightened, it was like you had the control that she so desperately wanted— needed— and you refused to give it back
she stood up, “i would tread really carefully, i can kick you out of more than just the school,” her eyes settled on josie, before walking away completely.
daniela wasn’t sure what it was— not now, not yet— but she would keep telling herself that jealousy didn’t exist when it came to you. that it wasn’t what she was feeling.
she was upset at your unprofessional behaviour was all.
