Have you ever struggled with the ReShade menu getting in the way when you're editing your screenshots? And have you ever wanted to up your virtual photography game and improve your compositions?

You only need two free shaders to improve your ReShade quality of life, speed up your editing process, and make sure you're getting the best compositions possible.

In just 7 and a half minutes I'll explain what they are, where to get them, and how to use them for both portrait and wide shots, with a little bit of art theory thrown in for kicks.

ReShade Guide: Transparent Screenshots

Want a nice cut-out picture? transparent chromakey shots are here to save the day!

You can achieve this with a combination of two features in ReShade: ChromaKey.fx, a technique that generates a greenscreen effect, and Clear Alpha Channel, a toggle located under the Settings tab.

1 - Setup

Make sure PNG is selected as the target format since JPG doesn't preserve transparency! Also, don't forget to re-enable Clear Alpha Channel after taking your shots - otherwise, you may capture completely black shots!

2 - Enabling the Shader

Place Chromakey.fx right after FFRestoreUI.fx- otherwise, your UI may be hidden by the shader.

3 - Take your screenshot!

You should now be able to capture shots with transparency properly preserved!

Chromakeyed, transparent images can be used in several different situations! For example, I often use it to create tutorial slides.

What about reference cards for art commissions?

Or maybe stickers with your friends. Or Discord emotes. Or whatever strikes your fancy. The sky's the limit!

UNDERSTANDING RESHADE - a guide by amoebae

This guide aims to give a general overview of what ReShade actually is, and a working understanding of the difference between the ReShade binary, ReShade shaders, and ReShade presets.

Additionally, at the end of the guide you'll find basic installation instructions, information about how to make a backup of ReShade, how to uninstall ReShade, and a few other helpful tips and tricks, including troubleshooting.

I've wanted to make a basic overview like this for a long time. I didn't realise how long the guide would end up! It's text-heavy, no screenshots, no videos.

I initially wanted to write something to solve the problem of people getting confused about the difference between ReShade (the tool) and shaders when they update to a newer version and find their presets might not look quite the same. I quickly realised that required a proper understanding of what ReShade actually is and how its different constituent parts work.

Never one to do things by halves, I got stuck in.

The result is something that hopefully gives a solid grounding in the way ReShade works, so people are better equipped to solve their own problems as they arise.

RESHADE IN 90 SECONDS

So you've heard about ReShade but you don't know what it is or how it works? Welcome to ReShade in 90 seconds!

In this fun, short guide you'll find everything you need to know about the different parts that make up ReShade. You'll learn about the ReShade dll, shader fx files, and ReShade add-ons, as well as a quick overview on how to download and install ReShade, so you don't need to be confused anymore!

HOW TO CHANGE THE RESHADE MENU FONT

Did you know you can change the font that the ReShade menu uses? The default font isn't that nice to look at, but we can do something about that! In this tutorial I show you how to use any font you have saved on your computer, and import it right into the ReShade menu, from start to finish!

I've made a couple of little updates to my Understanding ReShade guide over on Patreon.

I've included information about setting 3D Scene Resolution to High for TS4 players, clarified about using MSAA/Edge Smoothing, and more info about red errors when the the issue is shaders failing to compile under dx9.

I'm in the process of writing a little guide on how to use either DXVK or dgVooDoo2 to run TS4 (or any other dx9 game) as either Vulkan or dx11, which then allows you to use shaders that don't work under dx9. I have a couple of experiments to do before I finish it, but I'll get it linked in the Understanding ReShade guide, and of course here and everywhere else.

Quick little ReShade tip:

If you need to find a previous version of ReShade, for those from the last couple of large revisions (so 5.x and 6.x, I'm not sure if it works for earlier versions) you can just copy the download link for the most recent one and change the version number in the url.

So, the dl link on the front page of the ReShade website is currently for version 6.1.1, and the url for the addon version is https://reshade.me/downloads/ReShade_Setup_6.1.1_Addon.exe

You can manually change that link to get another version. For example, if I wanted 6.0.1 I would change the link to https://reshade.me/downloads/ReShade_Setup_6.0.1_Addon.exe

Someone also keeps an up-to-date repository on mediafire of all old versions going back years. This is linked to via the official ReShade forum, but it's up to you whether you want to take the risk downloading something from mediafire or not.

Remember, for both of these methods you will only be downloading the ReShade binary, not any of the shaders. When installing ReShade you'll be prompted to download shaders as usual, but they won't be shaders from old versions, they'll be the most recent shaders. If you've decided to use a particularly old version of ReShade you may run into problems. Try to stick to the most up-to-date version of ReShade that you can.
