Come Home
How long had it been since a true, brisk winter returned to Burgess or for that matter, the winter harbinger himself along with the freshly fallen snow?
Too long.
Yet the familiar sight of the small town brought a mix of comforting nostalgia and the feeling of pins and needles under his heels as if he were stepping on thin ice without setting foot near the lake. But his heart relaxed with the cheers of children raving about it snowing outside, the whispers of Jack Frost’s return, and the smiles of what children caught a glimpse of white hair and dark shades of blue fabric.
When the snow had settled like a blanket throughout the area and the temperature dropped to the right degree, the sprite glided through the streets, the woods, checking his work, and throwing snowballs here and there at the crowds of children in passing. He didn’t want to linger too long, fearing that his composure and hard work would take a turn if he loitered and gave them the chance to ask questions, but he kept up a good smile, indulged the children with games and the chance to build a snowman ‘the size of the Easter Bunny.’ It was easy to keep them all active and rearing for another game, but the inevitable happened and the question came out of a little blonde that reminded him a lot of Sophie when she was younger.
"Jack, where have you been?"
He grinned through the nervous flip in his stomach, “I’ve been helping out the Tooth Fairy at her palace.” Jack spoke easily after that, kneeling down before the girl and plucking a feather off of his armor to hand her. “If your friend needed your help, you’d run to their side, right?” The smile and feverish nod he got in return eased his mind with her curiosity sated and with that, he bid his farewell, warning the small ones to hurry inside with the sun finally setting and the foreboding of a blizzard he wasn’t sure he could contain by the end of the night.
If by chance, the snow fell harder and the wind picked up when he reached the cemetery, Jack was hardly at fault. Tooth’s lessons helped, he grew stronger in her kingdom, both physically and mentally, but she had warned him of the trials through grief and acceptance. How moving on was always a battle each day until the war finally ends and Jack was still at war with himself when the Earth seemed too still and he was left with his own thoughts.
His long strides slowed once he reached the correct stone, one he never wanted to see written in such a dreadful place. He knelt down in front of the grave, trembling fingers touching the marble to let patterns of frost form in each letter to catch the last light of the setting sun.
“…Hey Jamie. I’m home Kiddo.”
