Would you be able to explain some da- compounds? I understand that "dahinter" and "darunter" mean "behind it" and "under it." However, I'm confused about when they have other meanings, like "darauf" and "dabei." I feel like they should mean "on it" and "with it" but I often see them in places where that doesn't really translate.

I was wondering if you could clear something up for me. In the imperfect past tense (I think), for mixed verbs, you add a -te stem at the end, correct? So, for example, "ich kaufe" would become "ich kaufte." So then would, "ich bekomme" become "ich bekommte?" I was typing with my phone and it didn't have that in it's vocab.

Yeah, you're right that most of the time you would add a -te to the stem, but there are some verbs, like bekommen for example, that are called strong verbs, so there is no set pattern. Bekommen becomes bekam, sehen to sah, etc. Unfortunately, since there isn't a pattern, you just have to memorize these, but you can find the conjugations online

Is there a big difference between the words "aus" and "raus?" Same for "ein" and "rein?"

Well "aus" is a seperable prefix, whereas "raus" can stand alone. Both have basically the same meaning though. "Ein" is also a seperable prefix, but "rein" can stand alone or be used with a verb. For example: Komm rein- come in. They also have basically the same meaning (although rein can be used as an adjective to mean clean, pure, chaste, etc.)

I'm curious about something. In German nouns that describe a person indicate the gender of that person. For example, der Verkäufer/die Verkäuferin or der Künstler/die Künsterlin. How would you refer to a person who identifies as genderqueer or someone who chooses not to identify as either gender?

I feel like you would probably end up using the masculine version, but I have no idea. Can anybody help?

Typically one would you “in” when they’re going somewhere they’re going to be for a while. For example, “ins Bett” and “ins Kino.”Whereas you would use “zu” when you’er going to visit someone or a place they’re going to be for a short time.

I've never heard the explaination before, but that makes sense!
