On this day in showbiz history (8 May 1967), sex kitten extraordinaire and triple threat (actress, singer, dancer) Ann-Margret and actor Roger Smith married in a civil ceremony at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. (Appropriate, considering Margret was for years the Bob Mackie-clad undisputed “Queen of Las Vegas”). The mini-skirted bride looks radiant in the photos, but as People magazine recounted in 2017: “On their wedding day in 1967, the Swedish-born actress, who previously dated Elvis, was doing more crying than laughing. The couple eloped to Las Vegas, and Margret says the room they exchanged vows in was filled with cigarette smoke and far from glamorous. “This is not the way I envisioned my wedding,” she says. “I think everyone thought I was pregnant because I was crying though the whole thing. But we did it!”” Smith would retire from acting and devote himself to managing Margret’s career. The couple were married for fifty years, until Smith’s death on 4 June 2017.
