ABC News has put up a playlist called “RetroFocus.” It’s filled with clips from the past sixty or so years. Of particular interest to me are the voxpops: getting to hear the ‘on the street’ opinions of the average Australian from all those years ago.
Above is a 1966 video about the prevalence of bosoms in advertising. What was especially surprising is that, while opinions were mixed on the general exposure of such, most everyone felt negatively towards them being used for advertising.
Then there’s the 1961 clip “Who Should Handle The Money In The Home?” If you’re okay with spoilers, it was considered by most woman and most men as the woman’s job, some men saying it should be shared, and almost no men or women saying it’s a man’s job.
And then the big kicker. “Gay rights activist Dennis Altman's challenge to society in 1972.″ A ten minute video of a panel discussion that briefly touches on issues such as gender, social roles, toxic masculinity, and sexual identity.
It is said that the past is another country. Sometimes it’s good to get international news.
