Hii! I’m kinda new to the fandom and well... i’ve been catching up with some of the oldest fanfics i could’ve found and there is something that keeps coming up: Rivaille, like that’s the last name they give to Levi (I suppose this is before we knew he was an Ackerman) but I don’t get where it is coming from... could you explain it to me pleaaasee. Also Erwin being called Irvin but I think I understand that one... Anyways, love your blog!!!!❤️

Rivaille....wow that takes me back! You’re right Anon, before Levi’s full name was revealed to be Levi Ackerman, there were all kind of weird permutations of his name doing the rounds. Rivaille is before my time in the fandom, but I believe it came from a rather garbled phonetic approximation of the way “Levi” was pronounced in the anime. Just to add to the confusion, there was a lot of ambiguity about Levi’s rank too. If you go far enough back in the fandom you’ll find fics referring to Levi as Lance Corporal Rivaille Heichou. So yeah, that was a thing. I still occasionally read older fics that refer to Levi as Rivaille and although it’s really weird and jarring now, it’s also kinda quaint, as it’s part of the history of the fandom.
