Revanta, Son of Sun God Surya, Pala art from Bengal.

Sangya, the daughter of Vishwakarma (the celestial engineer and architect) was married to the Sun God (Surya) from whom she had three children – Manu, Yama and Yami. But a little while into the marriage she could not bear the glare and heat emitted from the Surya’s golden aura. Then Sangya plotted a plan for her escape. She created a clone (perhaps one of the first documented instances of cloning). She called her clone “Chhaya” (shadow). She installed Chhaya in her place and then went into the forest to do Tapasya (penance) by taking the form of a mare (she-horse). Meanwhile Surya did not notice the difference. He took Chhaya to be his wife; he initiated marital relations, as a result of which they had three children – Shani, another Manu (Savarni) and Tapati. Once Chhaya cursed Yama which led to doubts in the minds of Yama and Surya about her real nature. Then they confronted Chhaya and asked her who she really was? Finally Chhaya narrated the whole story. Then Surya went into Samadhi (deep meditation) and came to know that Sangya was doing penance in the forest in form of a mare. Then Surya too took the form of a Horse and approached Sangya. Out of their union, the Ashwini Kumar twins and Revant were born. The Ashwini Kumar(s) were given the responsibility of healing; keeping with this order, they pursued the field of medicine and emerged as the celestial physicians/doctors of the Gods. Meanwhile Vishwakarma, the celestial engineer and architect, put his skills to use and scrapped the glow away from Surya’s face and body. But he could reduce only one eighth of the glow of Surya.
