Artist Questionnaire: Brandee Younger
Are you inspired or have you taken part in Black Lives Matter protests or other social or political movements and what steps are you taking in your life and your music to address these issues?
I am inspired because some issues hit home for me.
In 2012, after the death of Trayvon Martin, I was inspired to compose the song "He Has A Name/Awareness". Trayvon looked just like my little brother. There's a fear that my brother, father, fiancé and friends have to live with that other folks don't even have to think about.
I think "Awareness " kind of says it all, with each event that has come to light I always think it's important to remember the people attached to these situations; The real life impact and how the surrounding communities are affected. I guess I am thankful for social media for increasing awareness and prompting people to action.
What does Thelonious Monk’s music mean to you? What does it spark in you when you hear it played or play it yourself?
When I hear Monk's music, I'm inspired to continue to be myself. I am emboldened to continue to forge my own path and think less & less about molds and conforming to them. I see sometimes you get to be the light that people follow.
Brandee Younger plays the Revive Music Stage at Winter Jazzfest. You can catch her set on Saturday, January 7th at Nublu.
#Repost @supremeuniter with @repostapp ・・・ This is what you call strategy. Upright bass string breaks during the first song of the first set. A string finally arrived by the 2nd to last song. @matssandahl handled like a pro during solo harp x drums. Thanks to @ducdeslombards75 for having us! The Pace Report: "Thoughts" The Otis Brown III Interview wsg Robert Glasper & Bilal Here's a very special edition of The Pace Report featuring Revive Music/Blue Note Records recording artist Otis Brown III. Otis has been a very important drummer on the jazz and indie scene for well over a decade backing and recording in Joe Lovano's US5, Esperanza Spaulding, Somi, and Oliver Lake just to name a few. His debut recording, "The Thought of You" was produced by Derrick Hodge(who is also featured on the disc) and has many fine musicians on the CD like: Gretchen Parlato, Robert Glasper, Bilal, Keyon Harrold, Nir Felder, and Shedrick Mitchell. Otis and I sat down at his NYC record release party at B.B. Kings in NYC and talked about the new CD and his roots as a musician in jazz. Enjoy!
