Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipstick: Review
(photo: musingsofamusing.com)
Revlon's Colorstay Ultimate Suede Lipsticks are the latest collection to join their ever growing line of lipsticks offering different finishes, coverage and lasting power. A while ago, I was chosen to be a part of #Revlonselects which engages bloggers to try and test some of their latest products. I will be reviewing some nail polishes and eyeshadows this week following this post but first..!

The colour I have is "backstage" which is the same colour worn by Olivia Wilde in the main visual for this campaign (google it, you'll want this lipstick too). It's a deepened wine-y red colour that is perfectly trendy and so in demand right now (score!). Another thing that excited me about this lipstick-aside from the shade- was the finish and the long wearing power it promises. If you have been following the skin/makeup trend for 2013 spring and forwards, you know that MATTE/SATIN/VELVET finishes are IT this year (for skin AND lips).
The packaging is really nice and modern with a clear plastic lid and a tall thin body. It doesn't look like a boring old lipstick bullet which I liked. Upon first application, I noticed that it glided on really smoothly and easily. The first layer was a little sheer and it took me about 3 swipes to get the lipstick to the same intensity as what Olivia's got on in the main visual. This is actually excellent because I realized I can wear this shade in a light wash of colour in case I feel that deep wine red could be a little too much for sunday brunches and morning meetings at the office.
(bottom left: fresh swatch, bottom right: after rubbing it off the lines are blurred but the colour clung onto the skin very well)
To put this lipstick to test, I had a meal, tea and some snacks and it was no surprise that it lived through the munching- the product is marketed as being "food proof". I'm sure by now you've tested or even owned a few long wearing lipsticks, but this feels a little different than the other long wearing formulas. I find most long wearing lipsticks to be thick, highly pigmented but a little drying. But this one glides on really smoothly and feels moisturizing upon first application, not to mention sheer to buildable colour formulation. After a few hours of wearing (and munching), my lips did feel like they could use a little balm- I threw on some lip butter and my lips were good as new and the colour still intact.
Overall, I'm a fan. I'll be picking up a few more shades I'm drawn to in this collection. If you're prone to dry chapped lips, you'll want to exfoliate your lips before wearing this lipstick. Though it is moisturizing and sheer at first, the formula thickens up a little to become long wearing- at which point, if you have unflattering flaky patches on your lips, they will become super obvious.
