Quick illustrations I did of Adam and Fallout Cory bc I’ve been hyping myself up for years to be able to draw them properly <3
Character ramblings below the divider, nothing too spoiler heavy (since I have someone who hasn’t watched through the series yet following me rn) but requires watching at least up to episode 8 season 1 to understand — sorry if it’s disjointed I wrote all of it as I went
Their dynamic makes my head spin but like in a good way, it might be the nostalgia but there’s always been a special place in my heart for Adam and Cory’s dynamic and how other character play into it.
Adam is a jaded, kinda asshole with a sick sense of humor and a person who is generally honest in his intentions. He’s a man whose been betrayed before and has experienced the worst the wasteland has to offer.
Cory, on the other hand, is a newly surfaced vault-dweller with a case of minor amnesia and whiplash from being forced to adapt to a world 200 years different from when he last saw it. He’s a far cry from the average wanderer out in the wasteland and that’s what I feel like inspires Adam to join the man’s party.
The sense of recklessness that comes from wandering into an underground bunker, raiding it with a talking dog, and trying to unsuccessfully-successfully smooth talk your way out of getting shot by asking the person holding you at gunpoint if they want to join you and your ragtag group find a place that sound too good to exist.
It’s stupid. A group consisting of a talking dog, a vault-dweller with a camera face, and a housecleaning robot surviving in the wasteland ? Not for another 200 years.
Though, when faced the choice between self-imposed isolation and the opportunity to be a part of a group once again, a group that appears to lack the awareness to recognize when they should be way more cautious about who they choose to bring on board, its way easier of a decision to make than expected.
It’s so interesting paying attention to Adam’s dialog throughout the early episodes because Adam appears to trust Cory much more than the others (for good reason but yk) and generally follows whatever is asked albeit with a bit of convincing sometimes.
By episode 8, the group has another member and Adam has somewhat warmed up to the rest of the cast, but only really shows some degree of loyalty and respect to Cory. He’s still a loner character to a degree and tends to rub other characters the wrong way as a result of jadedness and honesty.
When they end up in the cabin, the group is in disarray. Dawnsworth is powered down for the time being and Adam is concerned that the man he saw in the snow was someone potentially malicious. He’s expressed suspicions before to Cory about his decisions and other characters, but nothing to this degree — BUT it makes sense because the situation isn’t as mild. They’re in a cramped little cabin in the cold with limited supplies, a man down, and someone with unknown intentions on watching them.
When Dawnsworth powers on to tell the group about what he’s experienced, it doesn’t help Adam’s concerns and it spikes into paranoia. He doesn’t trust Dawn and makes that clear, but — as a result — he ends up angering Uni. A dog whose known the robot almost since the beginning of their journey.
Had Adam’s yells of betrayal and deceit been about Nick, Uni might’ve been inclined to agree — but because it was about Dawn, he couldn’t.
Cory is a character that tries to see the good in people, keep his group safe, and (somewhat) conflict free — but he can’t stop it from happening.
Had Uni been the only one to attack, he probably would have been scolded for the action. But since Adam escalated, Cory redirected his frustration towards the man he expected to have a more level head.
And Adam accepts it because he understands how badly he’s fucked up. His presence would only continue to elevate the group’s stress levels. And so he leaves with an apology, remorse directed towards the person who will responsible for cleaning up his mess, Cory.
It’s the least he can do until he clears his head fully. It’s not the first time he’s been on his own
