My Headcanons about Five Survive characters:

• Simon and Red loved Gritty the mascot when he was created, had insides jokes about him and all, but annoyed Maddy with it to the point she has a visceral reaction to the word “gritty”. (Almost as visceral as her reaction to “Mom”, but in a different way.)

• Maddy only keeps so many hair ties on her wrists because of how often Red doesn’t have time to put her hair up before school and forgets a hair tie of her own. Red constantly loses them and Maddy never gets any back. Maddy doesn’t mind this.

• Maddy’s dad taught Maddy and Red how to drive together. Maddy nearly hit their mailbox twice in the first few lessons.

• After the events of the book, Reyna gave Red her number in case she ever needed someone to talk to about the things she couldn’t say to anyone else.

• Simon’s favorite character from The Office is Jim.

• Red wakes from her coma on Maddy’s birthday.

• Oliver and Catherine really did love Maddy, but in the way you love a possession, because she was a Lavoy, not because she is Maddy. (Contrary to the love Red holds for Maddy, because while she does think of Maddy as hers, that possessiveness is an expression of her affection for Maddy as a person.)

• Arthur and Red do meet at the pier for closure, but much later than May 8th. (based on the timeline of events and time Red needs to heal, it is quite literally impossible for them to meet on the 8th.)

• Red and Maddy used to have sleepovers every week before Grace was killed.
