Fictober 2025 #1
8. "I know it sounds impossible."
Fandom: Rune Factory Characters: Ivan, Raguna Relationships: Ivan & Raguna, implied Raguna/Lynette Warnings: Small reference to murder/death Summary: Ivan finally reveals his connection to Raguna at Lynette's behest. ----
"Wait, so you're my brother? And we're princes?"
Ivan swallowed, then nodded. He had hoped to take their connection to each other to the grave. Raguna had found his happiness here in Kardia, and Ivan had refused to pull his brother away from it, had refused to thrust him back into the cold, ruthless world of the aristocracy, where he would receive reverence, but never love. Ivan himself had taken to masquerading as a traveling merchant while surveilling the country to avoid that world as much as possible, especially after it had not only failed to save his brother from that shipwreck all those years ago, but had dared (with the exception of the king) to merrily carry on as if nothing of value had been lost.
(After all, it wasn't as though Ivan and Raguna were part of the main royal family.)
But Raguna's wife, that damned former Sechs lieutenant (Raguna, even without his memories, still retained his too forgiving nature), had approached Ivan with the audacity to beg him to reveal everything to Raguna, saying that it would be more believable coming from Ivan's lips than hers. (As if she hadn't been the one responsible for his brother's memory loss!) Unfortunately, Ivan's vehement refusal had died on his tongue the minute he caught the soft, steady gaze of his infant nephew, who rested in her arms.
The nephew who was one of the few blood relatives he had left after the Sechs had slain his parents and years later rendered his brother a blank slate.
The nephew who would never know him as his uncle unless Ivan said so.
(Clever woman.)
So, there he was, seated across from his brother in the kitchen, fists clenched over his thighs and his heart thudding against his chest as he willed said brother to believe him.
"I...I know it sounds impossible, but it's true."
Raguna frowned, contemplative. "Then...why didn't you tell me until now? Did you think I wouldn't believe you?"
Ivan sighed. If only it was just that. "No, that wasn't why."
Raguna's frown turned devastated. "Oh--"
"I wanted to! I really wanted to!" Ivan cried, leaning over to hug Raguna like he used to when they were small and the latter had been needlessly scolded for some small thing or other before catching himself. He couldn't bear the idea of Raguna thinking, even for a second, that Ivan wanted nothing to do with him.
Sitting back down, Ivan continued, "But this is the happiest I've ever seen you in my life. You've made a home for yourself both here and in Trampoli. You've made friends, gotten married, have a family--how could I dampen your hard-earned joy by drudging up the past?"
Raguna shook his head, then rose from the table. "You're not dampening my joy. Yes, I'm happy here. But I've always wondered about who I was before, where I came from, if I left anybody important behind." He smiled once he reached Ivan's side. "If anything, knowing the truth makes me even happier."
Ivan's eyes burned as Raguna hugged him, tears only flowing once he returned the embrace.
If Marvelous ever makes a Rune Factory 1 Special, I really hope they make Ivan befriend-able. PLEASE.
