RF13th: Magic

The brisk autumn wind stirred golden leaves, scattering them through the air and along the cobblestone road. Frey sat along the riverside, enjoying the wind as the water trailed by, Dolce at her side, quiet and content. 

"Dolce, can I ask you something?" Dolce simply hummed her approval, her fingers lightly tracing the lace lining her sleeves. "Is Pico a ghost? Like, a real ghost?" Frey asked, her eyes wide and her face solemn. 

"Hm?" Came Dolce's reply, as she snapped back into focus after watching the river lazily pass. "What do you mean?"

"If she's a ghost, then she used to be human, right? And she died as a little girl, right?"

"Oh." Dolce looked back to the river, watching the autumn leaves gently float by. "Yes, that's true."

"Did you know her when she was alive?"

"I was rather enjoying the day before now, Frey." Dolce said with huff. "This isn't very pleasant conversation."

"Oh. I'm sorry." Frey said slowly. "I guess this is kind of personal, isn't it?"

"We don't talk about it. The time before. Pico simply always was as she is." Dolce paused briefly, her eyes distant. "It's sad. She doesn't like to make people sad, so we just live as we are."

"I see." Frey decided not to bring up the subject again, tempted to change the subject already. "I'm sorry for asking out of the blue."

Dolce turned her head lightly, giving Frey a small smile. "It's all right. I think I'll head back to the clinic…"

"What if I made some hot apple cider? I promise not to ask personal questions."

Dolce's smile was a little bigger. "Yes, that would be nice, actually."

A/N : I've always assumed Pico was Dolce's sister who died like her parents did, but it seems the game never goes into details. I wonder if they'll flesh it out a bit more in RF4SE!
