What We Wrote
My Anchorman review was appalling. As a deeper fan now I made several mistakes. For starters, I wrote a quote wrong. Yuck. That's bad. Also, I remember sitting down, writing it in 25 minutes, and then turning it in without proof reading it. After I read your comments, I then proof-read every piece of literature I turned into you. I was very surprised.
Closure: Scott McCloud
McCloud describes closure as, "phenomenon of observing the parts but perceiving the whole", meaning that the reader actually fills in what happens. The comic doesn't need to be like a film and have 24 to 30 frames for each second that passes in the comic, but can make jumps that the reader will fill in for themselves.
Donnie Darko Mood
The mood is flat out dark. How does it do that? Overkilled it! The music is very mystical and creates an ambiance that is very surreal and, well, dark. The clothing choices for Donnie are all dark tones. The cinematography itself is pretty dark, and as if all of that wasn't enough, his last name is DARKo. Come on.
Future Blog Updates?
Technology terrifies me. I never planned on even touching an i-Phone until I switched to Sprint and received on for free. Tumblr terrifies me. I have no idea how to use it. I can't even deal with the constant Facebook makeovers. So, while I can't imagine continuing my blog updates after this semester ends, I can see myself learning (waaaay too late in life) how to eventually use tumblr and join the bandwagon then.
Surprise!
Ok, so for this blog post I'm supposed to write about something I wrote that genuinely surprised me. I wanna use this post to clear the air about the diagnostics paper that I wrote at the beginning of the semester. I completely forgot that turning in an IOU was a choice so instead I spaced on the paper and wrote it fifteen minutes before class started. And the junk I came up with makes me cringe. Grossing myself out is no easy feat, however, that paper surprised me in terms of the how poorly written it was.
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
Act I
The audience is introduced to the protagonist of Dr. Horrible and his quest to win over his dream girl Penny and to be accepted into the Evil League of Evil. Dr. Horrible is in the middle of stealing wonderflonium to create his time-stopping freeze ray when Penny asks him to sign a petition. Conflicted, Dr. Horrible decides that "A Man's Gotta Do, What a Man's Gotta Do" and go after the wonderflonium until he is interrupted by his nemesis, Captain Hammer. Captain Hammer ends up meeting and seducing Penny in the midst of thwarting Dr. Horrible.
Act II
As Dr. Horrible starts to befriend Penny through the social medium of laundromats, he discovers Penny has really fallen for Captain Hammer. Captain Hammer makes it apparent to Dr. Horrible that he's only using her to spite Dr. Horrible. Dr. Horrible decides to kill Captain Hammer as a way to get accepted in the Evil League of Evil.
Act III
Dr. Horrible crashes a banquet held in honor of Captain Hammer with his Death Ray in hand. He takes aim at Captain Horrible before it malfunctions. Captain Hammer takes ahold of the death ray and shoots it at Dr. Horrible, it instead explodes causing shrapnel to fly everywhere and pierce and kill Penny. Ironically, this was the death that Horrible needed to get into the Evil League of Evil.
Donnie Darko- Mood
What I took away from this film is having to accept our own deaths. Death is imminent and inevitable. This creates a pretty dark mood and overall tone in the film, but that's not to say it didn't have it's comedic or light moments throughout.
Donnie Darko- Gender
Well, for starters, Gretchen (Darko's love interest) isn't murdered or sexually assaulted at the end of the film. I mean she's harassed by Seth Rogen but that's beside the point. The over-sexualiztion of the young girls on Kitty Farmer's dance team is purely for satirical purposes. I think the female gender representation in this film is not nearly as bad as the representations in the comic book examples we looked at in class.
