hfhdhfjefhuhfeojfm thinking about rhinedottir (what else is new), but in MY canon, Dain and Rhine were each other's first loves (I am probably never letting that fanfic see the light of day, it's too prosey). But right before the cataclysm, due to abyssal corruption fucking with her mind, she pushes him away. It's not even a breakup or anything, just a nasty fight where she tells him to leave her alone. Then, the cataclysm happens. They never got any closure, and the last thing she ever said to him was, "I don't want to see you right now." At first, he didn't even know if Celestia allowed her to live, so he assumed she had been killed to ensure she didn't play god again, but he started to hear rumors of her still being alive. He has never found her, but it makes enough sense that she's still kicking.

He falls hard. He was enamored with Rhine when they were teens, and eventually, he moves on, falling hard for Lumine. But he can't help but think of the similarities the two women possess as she leaves him for abyss-adjacent reasons. At least he got closure with this relationship. He doesn't seek Rhine out, too afraid to see how things would pan out. Would she still be as heartless as the abyss corrupted her to be? Has she moved on? There are too many possibilities for him, and he's not entirely sure he could stop himself from falling in love at the first sight of her again. Even as his memories slowly fade, all of the memories of her are fully intact.

I'd like to think that Rhine always had a bitter and vindictive side to her. She was always low-key jealous of Lumine for the way that she was just allowed to rise to the top of Khaenri'ahn society, while Rhinedottir had to work herself to exhaustion every day just to accomplish /something/! Lumine has no idea what it's like to have to grow up in a nation almost entirely dependent on other nations importing food and hoping a war doesn't break out above ground, stopping their main source of food. She doesn't know what it's like to feel beyond guilty if she doesn't work herself sick just so she can try to create some dependable source of food for an entire nation as one child! Lumine just showed up one day and was suddenly a beacon of hope.

Rhinedottir does not know how to deal with emotions well, so when she is hurt, she buries it deep until she forgets about it. Being able to think about such trivial matters only in passing is beneficial to her work anyway. She did not cry over losing her first love for 500 years. But somehow, someway, she found out that Dain had been in a relationship with Lumine, the woman she spent her whole life being bitter over, and she loses her shit. First, she's pissed off that Lumine takes everything away from her so easily, everything that she's worked hard at. Then, she starts to cry. Her heart shatters at the realization that, if they had lived a normal life, it wasn't completely unlikely that he would've left her for the other. Everything she has ever worked towards ends up ripped away from her

According to this thread by Monard and a lot of peeeps in Rhinenation i come to the conclusion that we need a long fic Rhine x Dain / Rhinealice angst fic where Rhinedottir is fighting with Dain and tell him trusting the traveler is wrong

A fic where Rhine is angry and feel powerless and disarmed all the while still obligated to uplift her people in the meantime

God wanna write that so much but I have to finish my current one first 😫😫

What Capitano said about Dain and his hatred for the sinners just adds to the Daindottir brain rot. lovers to enemies to lovers trope, in the sense that he never lost feelings but just felt disgusted for being with her after her involvement with the cataclysm and the destruction of their homeland, so he ended things and then they got back together ~500 years later
