Inktober 2018 - Day#24
@billy-ruffian‘s Rhoda <3
Rhoda by the amazing @destinyapostasy ! Huge thank you again ♥
Concept: between waves of demons, Rhoda yells ‘biscuit break!’. Dorian watches, aghast, as she and Sera each shove fifteen or sixteen custard creams into their mouths.
I’m considering making Rhoda my canon inquisitor right now, partly because I feel like her personality fits in with the game better, but also because I’m so into the idea of Tamik and Josephine falling in love when Tamik is just a lowly travelling minstrel, without the status bestowed by the role of inquisitor.
I mean... that’s like a fairytale right there. If I ever get myself together enough to write anything again, would people be interested in reading that story?
The more I think about it the more I realise that given the chance Teagan and Rhoda could have been very close friends.
Post-da2, both of their lives are very much ruled by guilt and grief -- Rhoda for her brother and Teagan for her part in the beginning of the mage/templar war, which she blames herself for to a pathological degree, like it kind of summarizes her sense of terror and helplessness as responsibilities which she never wanted became far, far too much for her. She wasn’t good enough, she thinks, either to take them on or to pass them to someone else; trapped in the middle, she dithered until she was far past the point of no return. When they look at each other they see a reflection, warped by their starkly different personalities, of their own trauma, like there’s a sort of unspoken echo between them.
Inquisition Teagan is sort of sad and slow, without much of her old mischief -- it’s still there when she can forget, but surrounded by reminders of what she’s done (or not done) the sadness she’s always trying to escape catches up with her and she mourns the past, desperately, and what she expected her life to be. And Rhoda, who’s always hiding her anxiety and guilt behind brashness and wild energy, falters a little when she speaks to Teagan because Tea is someone for whom something is so obviously not right, though Rho can’t tell what it is. It draws something out of her, a sympathy, and without knowing each other’s precise sorrow it makes a spark between them, a sort of fragile bridge.
They never get to become close, I think, there just isn’t time (though I haven’t decided who Rho will leave in the fade yet, it’s probably Teagan, because she sees that it’s like redemption for her -- redemption which Rho desperately wishes she could so easily find, but which she finds herself eager to give as a gift to another.) But there’s a sort of tentative, wordless intimacy whose source they don’t understand.
Tagged by @chaitea09 to make someone using the elven portrait maker! It had... Rhoda’s exact earrings? Incredible??
Bonus: T’Lera, who is definitely an elf,
The fire was guttering, and Rhoda wondered again whether the tightness in her lungs was the start of suffocation or only fear.
Three days into the Deep Roads and she gripped her staff-shaft as if it was the only thing holding her to life. If the others saw the tension in her knuckles, skin stretched transparent over bone, they didn’t say anything. She wasn’t going to let them down by breaking down. She wasn’t going to break down. She wasn’t...
She kicked off the rough blanket and went to the fire, silently, because her companions were sleeping. At least, she hoped they were sleeping -- Dorian’s foot twitched suddenly, usually a dead giveaway that he was only pretending --once she would have thrown herself down again at the thought of being caught awake with fear, anything, anything but have a weakness laid open. As it was, she only looked at him for a moment or two and then surged forward, uncaring.
From the bag of fuel she drew two stout logs, pressing them down onto the coals to that the flames licked up their dry sides, and at the same time she forced a deep breath, and then another, until she felt the air fill her lungs like a river.
y’all, i have a weakness.
@billy-ruffian‘s rhoda lavellan, who is my weakness. i love her.
