7. Rhulani’s South African Tourism Ad

Rhulani was rightfully sent home for this photo but it’s one that my mind keeps coming back to. Despite not working as a tourism ad it works amazingly as an art piece, I could totally see this hanging in a museum. There’s something almost haunting about her expression and the play of light and shadow on her bronzed skin, I like to think of her as a hungry ghost trapped in a cage of sticks.

Dishonorable Mentions:

Since I didn’t want to devote a whole countdown to making fun of photos, I’ve collected what I perceive to be the “worst” photos of the cycle into one post. There actually weren’t that many, by and large most of the shots this cycle fell somewhere in the middle, but there were definitely some standouts in both the good and bad categories.

Model Ranking Tier 2: Advanced Filler

Omowunmi: The Meme Queen

My Callout Average: 9.7 vs. Actual Callout Average: 8

Omowunmi had limited modelling potential and with three weeks to prove herself still performed worse than some of the girls beneath her, but she escapes Tier 1 on the strength of her personality. The cast of the show took a few weeks to warm up to being on camera but Omowunmi was a delight to watch from day one and carried us through those first few episodes. Her disastrous on set performance in the first episode and her confessionals were reality tv gold, so I have no issue with her making it as far as she did.

Roselyn: Distinguished Filler

My Callout Average: 4.4 vs. Actual Callout Average: 4.5

I actually quite like Roselyn and think she earned her spot in the Top 6 but when I sat down and thought about it, I don’t really feel like she was a force in this cycle. She had a fun personality in confessionals, turned in strong performances on set, took good photos, but she never really had a breakout moment or anything. I never truly considered her a threat for the title and think she left at the right time, but she was a very strong contestant so I hope she booked a lot of work after the show.

Rhulani: The Rookie

My Callout Average: 6.75 vs. Actual Callout Average: 4.75

Ah, Rookielani. I forgot how strong of a presence Rhulani had during her time on the show, she was the prime source of drama while she was there. Her calling out Michelle for being fake, the other girls complaining about the judges favoring her, the shocking fight with Cheandre, she provided a lot of solid reality tv moments. Despite being a drama magnet she seemed like a nice enough person and I think she has such an interesting look, so she was a very dynamic contestant to watch. I do think that the judges overpraised her for her mediocre performances but they cut her at the right time, so no harm done really.

8. Rhulani (Actual Callout: Eliminated)

Despite me having her in the last spot Rhulani’s photo is actually one of my favorites of the week. There’s something haunting about it in an artistic way, it feels like a hungry ghost who’s been captured in some sort of dreamcatcher. That said, this is supposed to be a tourism ad and I don’t know if this picture really makes me want to go to wherever it is that she’s at because it seems to be a very sad, boring place.

Rhulani just looks clueless in this photo. There’s no intention or life anywhere in this photo, everything about her body language just looks slack  and uninspired. She had one of the most restrictive headpieces but it was also one that presented a lot of possibilities, and she explored none of them. She’s resting on her looks and the headpiece and not bringing anything out from within, so even if it’s more interesting than some of the other photos this week that’s in no way thanks to Rhulani.

Rhulani was the clear weakest link of the cast at this point and she had the worst photo so her elimination was a no brainer. I think she deserved to make it this far off the back of her surprisingly solid performances the past few weeks but she hit a wall on this shoot and being a rookie was no longer an excuse for her. She was a good addition to the cycle though, she was a decent competitor and brought some good drama to the house.

7. Rhulani (Actual Callout: 3rd)

Props to Rhulani for not doing such a good job on set but the photo they picked for her doesn’t do it for me. There’s a sensuality to her pose and the way she’s caressing her skin that works for a lotion ad (although I wish she hadn’t lined both of her legs up like that because it makes it look like she only has one leg), but she’s let down by her face. Her eyes are vacant and her mouth is hanging slack, and there’s no energy in the neck tilt so she just looks sleepy.

She was miles above Omowunmi so even in my fantasy callout I wouldn’t send her home but third callout was a stretch. She’d been getting a lot of praise for being a rookie and succeeding but she needed a wakeup call that that wouldn’t fly for photoshoots.

4. Rhulani (Actual Callout: 2nd)

Rookielani strikes again! Much was made about Rhulani having no runway experience, so I was surprised by how strong she was during the show. Her walk was steady and confident and she looked absolutely gorgeous in the clothes. This photo of her stomping down the runway with her hair pulled back and her hands on her hips is the first moment I really realized what kind of modelling potential that she had. She needed to close her mouth more though, something we’ll see will be a theme with her.

While I don’t agree with her getting second callout, I think the praise she received from the panel was absolutely deserved.

8. Rhulani (Actual Callout: 6th)

Rhulani’s take is objectively pretty messy but unlike the girls ranked beneath her she overcame it with charm and enthusiasm. She struggled with the balloons and didn’t look like a model for most of it, but she was always smiling and that alone made me want to watch her. I think she best understood what filming the opening credits entailed, which was to just be fun and high energy since the audience is only going to see a few seconds of it anyways.

This was the start of the “Rhulani gets credit for being a rookie” storyline, but I think that it was deserved here.
