As soon as you buy the gift cards, McDonalds already has your money, you lose any negotiating power. At that point it would be offering them their own coupons, the gift cards have no real value. It's like if you bought a copy of Monopoly and tried to use the money from that to buy a Hasbro factory.

I’ve had people also compare this to buying Fortnite with V Bucks and the comparison just doesn’t stack.

Monopoly money and V Bucks can’t be exchanged for any good or service. You have negotiating power because you can use the gift cards to get burgers for free. If you buy the gift cards at one store and spend them at another, they’re out millions of dollars worth in potential revenue.
