Day One of @ockissweek is finally here!!! I'll be following their officiall pronpt list for the week and postong accordingly!! So here's the prompt for day 1- Beginning wherein I chose to write about a lot of beginnings. I chose Rhysper (Rhys/Jasper) because it was the first OCxOC ship I had ever made with @commander-sarahs-art which has led to many, many more and a friendship that I will always cherish. So this pairing is very near and dear to my heart and what better way to start it off than by writing about the very beginning of their relationship and their very first kiss!
Next to a crackling fire burning low, Jasper sits watch in the dead of night over this group of mismatched folk he’s come to know as his friends. He frequently volunteers for the midshift of their nightly guard rotation, interrupting his sleep partway through to let the others rest unbroken. He’s used to being up around now, Judas’s sleeping form at his feet the only available company while everyone else curls up in their own bedrolls just at the edges of the small circle of light.
Tonight he finds himself struggling to fend off the long tendrils of sleep that reach out for his mind. The low light of the fire and ambient noises of the forest around them, even the gentle wuffs of Judas’s soft breaths seem to lull him closer to sleep. His eyelids grow heavy under its call, enough so that he misses the movement in the darkness on the other side of the fire. Rhys nudging his shoulder is his first alert she’d moved to sit at his side on the log that they had made shift into a seat, and his answering jerk as she brings him to full attention earns him a small chuckle.
“Go on to sleep, I’ll start my watch a little early,” Rhys says once he’s calmed his wild eyes, inclining her head towards his empty bedroll that practically screams his name.
“Are..you sure?” he questions, entirely torn on what he hopes the answer will be. Though the wide yawn that had interrupted him should already tell him the truth of what he feels, part of him, the good part, the honorable part argues that she should be the one getting as much rest as she can. Yet despite himself he still can't deny that the other part of him, probably the larger part, desperately longs to accept her offer.
“I am,” Rhys assures him, no sign of her usual sarcasm in her tone. “Couldn't sleep anyways, and you aren't much good at standing guard half-asleep as you are.”
Her usual teasing surfaces, though there's an undeniable truth to her barb, and it should speak to Jasper's true state that he can't even muster the guilt he should feel at the implications, only a small sting at having been caught in such a state. He opens his mouth to thank her anyhow, only for another yawn to take the place of the words and Rhys’s gives him an endearing smile that soothes whatever sting he might have felt.
“Thank you,” he finally says when he regains control of his own mouth, and then in a move that surprises even himself he leans across the short gap between them and presses a quick kiss to her cheek.
The skin of her cheek is soft, impossibly so, under the contact of his lips, and he regrets its loss the moment he pulls away. Forcing himself to stand and walk away, lest his newfound yearning for her touch urge him to take the kiss on her cheek any farther, he misses evermore important information of the night.
The fierce flush that colors Rhys’s cheeks in answer to his unexpected move, and the rising indignation in her eyes as she herself rises to her feet herald her coming response. A response he might have been able to anticipate had he been looking for her reaction, but with his back turned to her he entirely misses any such clue.
“Hey!” Rhys calls out before she can stop and think better of it. Jasper starts to turn at the sound of her voice, but Rhys only lets him complete half of the movement before an even more shocking turn of events takes the night. Fisting her hands in the collar of his jacket Rhys abruptly pulls him around to face her and plants her lips on his.
As first kisses go it’s a little bit awkward, a brusque clashing of lips and teeth, but her skin is soft and warm against his and though the rest of him freezes in the moment, his arm instinctively wraps around her waist.
Much like the kiss on her cheek, this one is over all too soon. Rhys pulls back just as quickly as she’d rushed forward, dropping rather unceremoniously back down onto the log, her face blank and staring intently at something unseen in the distant woods as if even she is surprised by her actions.
Jasper in turn, frozen where he stands, is admittedly awe struck by her actions. Emotions muddled by his surprise, he struggles to parse out exactly how her kiss makes him feel, though all he’s managed to gather at the moment is he’s not at all displeased by it.
His body decides his reaction for him before his mind has quite caught up, dropping to his knees before her of its own accord. Rhys deliberately maintains her focus on something, anything else, besides him, and his fingers gently catch her chin in their grip. Bringing her eyes to meet his, he watches their depths intently as the words spring from his mouth, “I'd really like to do that again.”
“Please,” Rhys doesn't hesitate to offer her permission, the single word falling from her lips sounding far more desperate than Jasper thinks he's ever heard her.
But he's more than happy to oblige all the same.
This kiss is far slower, far more deliberate, and far more evenly matched than either of the others. They lean towards each other in equal measure and instead of the unanticipated clash of lips from before, they’re both eagerly awaiting the moment they meet with the soft press of skin on skin.
Jasper’s hand slips from her chin into the hair at the nape of her neck, gently holding the back of her head as her lips start to move against his. It’s familiar, the pleasant feel of another person’s lips on yours, but entirely different all the same. Rhys is unlike any woman he’s ever met before, this much he’s always known to be true, and it should be unsurprising that her kisses would follow the same trend.
More than her obvious skill, it feels somehow right, a feeling neither is entirely used to but he’s certainly not opposed and if her body language is anything to go off she isn’t either.
It’s a feeling like they have finally reached the culmination of all their teasing, her suggestive jokes, and his secret desires, and he couldn’t be happier to have reached this moment.
As their kiss ends, and they pull apart, Jasper squeezes her hand in time with anxious squeeze of his heart. Even now that this had happened, he still couldn’t be entirely sure what they had just started between them, a more awake Jasper would have to sort that out, but he hoped they could figure it together.
For if there was thing he knew for certain...this was just the beginning for them.
