Rhythm Blues

Nico and Arugula are doing the "dah dee dah" dance, and urge Lotta to join them. However, when Lotta looks at them doing the dance, she just sees a big blur of colors. She tries to learn the dance but isn't getting it due to all the colors around her. She gives up and leaves, and runs into Carl, who is measuring the distance from the flowerbed to the bridge. Carl was helping Forrest and Sheldon water the flowers, but since Carl is sensitive to the smell of the flowers, he decided to find the flowers, so he could still help. After talking with Carl, she realizes how she can join Nico and Arugula - instead of dancing, she can play the music on her keyboard, since she can easily learn a song after hearing it. Lotta also tells the twins about her synesthesia, though it's not explicitly called that in the episode, probably because it's a big word for kids. In the end, Lotta plays the music, Arugula dances, and Nico records a video.

I like how this episode taps into Lotta's synesthesia, which was previously alluded to "Whole Lotta Lotta." It also reveals that Lotta doesn't like being touched, which is common for autistics. I like how Arugula asks Lotta's permission to hug her first, Lotta politely declines, and Arugula accepts it. She's a great friend.

Giving Up the Ship

Carl wants to play "popcorn pirates" with Sheldon, which they have been doing since they were in preschool. Arugula and Forrest join the game, but Sheldon isn't here yet. When Sheldon does come, but he is not dressed in pirate gear. Carl urges Sheldon to join the game, but he doesn't really want to. He tells Arugula and Forrest that he doesn't like playing popcorn pirates anymore. He wanted to tell Carl, but after seeing how excited he was, he decided against it, so he decides to pretend to like playing the game. Sheldon doesn't actually enjoy playing the game, and declines to do various tasks in the game. Eventually, he snaps and blurts out that he doesn't like playing popcorn pirates anymore, and goes home. Carl, of course, is very upset about this. Sheldon explains that he just outgrew the game, but he still likes being Carl's friend. Then they play popcorn pirates one last time, and realize that they can do something new together: make model ships.

I don't know what to think of this episode. I think it's a bit TOO relatable. While I have outgrown many of my interests, I remember when I was little, I would cling on to my interests. I still wanted to watch Dora the Explorer when I was seven, and my parents said I was too old for it and I had to read chapter books and watch Cartoon Network instead. I loved doing those things. Now, for obvious reasons, I don't really keep up with children's books anymore, and when I do read, I read the classics, and CN's modern programming lineup is weak, but I still love their old shows. And then when I was eight, I watched cartoons while my friends wanted to watch teen dramas. I still don't understand that. You should be playing toys, not watching Degrassi. But yeah.
