David Weldon aka Rhythm D scored a massive hit out the gate with Paperboy’s “Ditty” in 1992. That song is barely remembered today but the single went gold and was a top 10 smash. Much more enduring was the material he produced for Eazy E after Dr. Dre left the Ruthless Records camp.
Meeting Eazy at his compound for an informal audition shortly after the release of The Chronic Rhythm D noticed how defeated everyone looked. His house was filled with recording equipment but nobody was using it. A half-interested Eazy hopped in the shower but as he overheard some beats Rhythm was playing in the next room he quickly dried off, handed him some cash and said “you’re rolling with Ruthless”.
He quickly got started on E’s comeback EP which was a surprise hit. In 1993, Dre was riding high and Eazy-E was out for the count but “Real Muthaphukin G’s” stood toe to toe with “Dre Day” and still stands as one of the goat dis tracks. D was on fire for the next couple of years as Ruthless Records newest in-house producer but unfortunately Paperboy, Steffon, and all the other rooty-poots lacked Eazy’s charm and vocal presence, and after Eazy’s death he slowed his production roll but remains active today.
