Eyeing him between the fingers splayed over his eyes, he clears his throat importantly. “Mr Ambrose Fred’s been. You’ve just missed him. He said we’ve terrible fengshui in here.” Withnail isn’t entirely sure what fengshui is, but that isn’t stopping him. “He said we’ve to move the settee so it’s facing the south-east.”

barry has better places to be than here, now it’s all been said and done. maybe he wants to leave already. it’s hard to tell, only looking at the back of his head. if he wanted to go he would probably go, but maybe he’s being polite. it’s a long way to the door when someone is staring.

i think about saying something. do you wanna go? you can go. if you want. if you want to go you can go. you don’t have to stay. do you wanna stay? will you stay? do i want him to stay? i don’t know if i want him to stay. if he stays does it mean something? does it mean anything, or is it just staying? do you know?

staying and wanting to stay are different. it’s logic. elliot lights a cigarette. this is maybe the first time in his life he’s been compelled to break the silence. “do you smoke?”

It’s ten thirty at night, the shuttle back to campus has been due for twenty minutes, and imagine the relief when a dull thump hitting the pavement behind Isserley is nothing but five feet nothing of red spandex. She raises a hand almost daintily in its trepidation. “Heya, Spiderman.” The streetlamps are working, but Isserley is inarguably the brightest thing on the sidewalk. “Geez, how - how’d you spot me.” She hikes her shoulders around her neck. “Don’t think I’ve ever seen you in the city before.”
