Asian Painted Frog (Kaloula pulchra)
Native to Southeast Asia, living in a variety of habitats such as; populated villages, to rice fields, and leaf-covered forest floors
Common names include chubby frog, Asian painted frog, Asian bullfrog, banded bullfrog, rice frog, bubble frog, and painted bullfrog
All Asian painted frogs available in the pet trade are wild-caught
They are most productive after storms during the rainy season. During dry months of the year, they often are secretive and rarely reveal themselves to humans
This frog has a back which is colored a rich mahogany brown, with a cream band down each side, usually with a darkish edge
Asian painted frogs have no neck bones and therefore, no neck, which gives it a chubby look
These frogs make vocalizations which have been described as resembling a cattle bellow and being very loud
During the mating season the male frogs float in the water making loud cow-like “honks” to attract the females. The air they suck in in order to make this noise, combined with their already rotund appearance, gives the impression of floating beach balls with legs
Females are generally larger than males
The Asian Painted Frog helps control ant and termite populations. It is a food source for snakes, monitors, and humans
This frog has spade-like growths on its back feet that assist it in digging backwards into the soil
his frog will excrete a slightly toxic substance from their skin while held, but the poison is weak and poses no danger to humans. You will notice it on your skin when your fingers start sticking together after handling the frogs
