I’m currently obsessed with Richard Dobson. This is his song “Forever, for Always, for Certain.” Discovered it earlier today and it did me in. Still working on an arrangement that works for me.
It’s a shame it took me this long to get into his music. He spent time in the 1970s hanging out and playing with some of my songwriting idols: Guy Clark (who actually recorded this song), Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle and, yes, Townes Van Zandt. Geez, the only one missing was John Prine.
If you haven’t already, I HIGHLY recommend you check out the Heartworn Highways footage of him performing this and another song. It was included as a DVD bonus, which explains why I missed it the first time I streamed it on Qello. I really should get a physical copy. Didn’t think that documentary could change my life more than it already had.
Also, Dexter thinks guitar cases are beds and he enjoys joining in on the music with sonorous barking.

Richard Dobson - Baby Ride Easy
Although his name isn't very prominent, you might recognize him from Heartworn Highways. In the 70's, Richard Dobson hung out with Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and "Skinny" Dennis Sanchez and much later on, wrote a book about his time with them called The Gulf Coast Boys.
His album In Texas Last December was released in '77 and is a really wonderful collection of songs, but unfortunately, it's incredibly difficult to find on vinyl. The liner notes include a quote by TVZ that says, "There is no such thing as a best songwriter. My favorite best songwriters are David Olney, B.W McTell, P. La Farge and R. Dobson... Richard, please get them to spell my name right."
"Baby Ride Easy" would end up being covered by Johnny Cash and June Carter and Dave Edmunds and Carlene Carter.
"If your lovin' is good, and your cookin' ain't greasy, hitch up the chuckwagon and we'll ride away..."
