When Ancoats meets Shakespeare!
Throughout 2013 Manchester based Artist Richard Shields has been curating a series of exhibitions and events looking at the ties between today’s society and that of the Renaissance. In ‘The Journey Of The Artist And The Price Of The Ticket’. Art, Finance and Religion are the conduit for conversation. For Northern Art Car Booty, Shields looks to continue his exploration into historic and contemporary parallels in the form of a fiscal performance. The artist will be using Ancoat’s historic immigrant Italian trader heritage, Al Pacino’s performance of Shylock in the film adaptation of William Shakespear’s ‘The Merchant Of Venice’ as the subject matter for his new work entiled ‘Keep A Pound Of Flesh’
The History of Banking is prominent throughout ‘The Journey Of The Artist And The Price Of The Ticket’ and for this performance Shields looks at Venetian money lending though Shakespeare, the Medici dynasty in his use of ‘Medici Crest’ font and his own Barclays Debt for which he is currently being pursued by debt collectors.
Contracts will be produced on the day for the price of 3000 pence (£30) in relation to the 3000 ducats owed by Antonio to Shylock and the 3000 pounds Shields owes Barclays. Each contract will provide the public to return home with ‘A Pound Of Flesh’

Title of art work: Art for All at Every Level
Description of art work/Pledge:
Inside this Box is the perfect work of art. To see it would be to gaze in amazement at it's beauty and conceptual depth. It is truly art for everybody, however if you open the box you will immediately destroy the work for yourself, never to experience it again. The box has now been nailed shut and will be consigned to the flames intact.
