Rich Jacobs is many things that I admire, including kind, gentle, calm, curious, and intelligent. Yet the thing that I always realize about my friend Rich is just how generous he is. He has connected me to so many great people, projects, and ideas, and to so much general goodness in the worlds of skateboarding and art that he is my own personal Kevin Bacon. I’m sure he’s like that for many of us. In 2003, I asked @movezine to make a painting for me. I gave him not very much money and one directive...I wanted it to be called, "Big Money Gorilla" for some reason. He found two perfectly symmetrical pieces of wood from the wood shop below his apartment in Red Hook, and weeks later presented me with this wonderful object. Thank you Rich! Just unearthed this gem of a book from 2003 (pre Beautiful Losers) that Rich Jacobs (@movezine), Marsea Goldberg (NewImageArt), and Brenda Labier put together. This catalog coincided with one of the first (if not the first) museum exhibitions of skateboard culture related art and artists. Brenda at the Contemporary Art Center Of Virginia was forward thinking enough to reach out to us and along with Rich and the support of @pmtenore we put together this amazing group of artists that would later go on to become some of this generations most revered.
