It wasn’t the first time that Rick had gotten assigned to take care of the education for the newbies at their department even if he was the leading sheriff already and chose his colleague Abraham to take over the education. Sometimes his friend was still asking for the chiefs advice and maybe it wasn’t the right decision to choose him for this department since Abraham wasn’t exactly the most common with the paperwork or rules, but on the other hand Rick usually didn’t mind to support him whenever time allowed it cause he could get the best overview about who was really made for this job and who wasn’t and Abraham still was so much better in social interactions compared to him after all.
Today Ruby was the one he should take care of and even if the newly divorced sheriff always felt awkward around women, especially pretty ones, as long as they had a mission to focus on it shouldn’t be a problem, but little did he know how much this one would challenge him.
“Calm down, you got this.” he told himself before leaving his office, taking a deep breath before he found her sitting with Abraham at his desk. “Miss Ryder?” he said and cleared his throat, avoiding to look at her eyes directly and instead just knocking on the desk gesturing at her to follow him. “You’ll go with me today. We have a crime scene to look at and I want us to be the first ones arriving so you get used to the process.” Without even looking back he noticed that Abraham was whispering some stuff to her, probably warning her about the “stressed out broken man” like he often saw himself as. Of course he wasn’t that much broken from the divorce since it had been coming a long way, but Rick couldn’t deny that being a married man and living the average life in a house planning to get a family had always been the only thing he imagined for himself and sometimes it was hard to accept that this apparently wasn’t what destiny planned for him. Sometimes like today he was too full of thoughts that he even was still wearing his wedding band just because it was such a habit to him that he forgot to take it off after losing himself in memories the night before.
While waiting for Ruby to join him in the car, he rested his elbow against the window and looked outside until he heard her sitting down on the passengers seat. “Since it’s the first time we’re working together I just want to mention that I don’t like this annoying boss talking most people have towards me. I’m your colleague like everyone else is in here and I don’t want you to feel looked down at, alright? So I’d prefer if you just call me Rick. When we’re at the location it’s Grimes for you, you okay with that?” For the first time now he turnt his head to look at her clearly and immediately noticed those big blue eyes staring at him with all the excitement he once had for his job as well. Or was it about the job? It better would be or he would feel highly uncomfortable right now. “Keep that fire going Ryder and you’ll just do fine. Just show me what you got.” And with that he looked back to the front and turnt the key to start the engine.
