Chuck Johnson - Riga Black
Earlier this week I stumbled upon Chuck Johnson’s debut LP Balsams and it caught me off guard. I started off listening to the album and NPR at the same time and kept thinking I need to turn the album off get up to speed with the political news of the day. But as time went by and I slowly found myself slipping deeper and deeper into Chuck Johnson’s ambient pedal steel guitar meditations. This is an example of an album finding me which completely overtook me which to me are some of the best experiences in life. If you are looking for a break from your day to day I highly recommend that you track Balsams down and slip into its rich world of sound.
The album is being released by Light In the Attic records and you can get more info on their website here. Also check out Pitchforks review here which describes the album as an “expressive and singular new album, Chuck Johnson gives his steel pedal guitar the starring role, and creates a kind of country post-rock. It feels like a universe unto itself.”
