“Right, then!”

It’s a word I think all Brits rather overuse. It is a word we use when we’re about to do something, anything really, from closing our lap top to the first thing you say before you start climbing up the mountain in gale force winds. I use it often to kick start a meeting to make it clear that I don’t want people to waste time and to get to the point.

But it’s a question of tone and intent. I could really mean "I'd better do something" if I said “right, then!” multiple times over a long period of time (e.g. the whole of Sunday) without actually doing anything to move my lazy arse out of bed.

Sometimes "right, then!” helps me get out of an awkward moment like walking in unannounced on a corporate CEO with his pants down and his pretty secretary on her knees engaged in what one might delicately describe as ‘in flagrante delicto’, or presumably what others might charitably say as ‘taking dick-tation’.

And like then, as now, I use it to bring a conversation to an abrupt close and quickly make a hasty retreat....

Right, then!
