What is good writing?
(1) What is Writing?
Writing the method that humans use to record thoughts, stories, emotions, and other aspects of their lives. Writing is used in every field and walk of life, and is an essential tool for interacting with other people. It allows for the communication of complex thoughts and ideas through a universal medium. Writing can be used as a strategy for personal reflection or exploration, as well as a powerful tool to persuade others or give exposure to ideas.
(2) Who are you as a writer?
Personally, my favorite type of writing is argumentative/persuasive writing. I like to make strong arguments when writing, and these essay structures are most supportive of that style. When I write, I like using solid concrete evidence to support my assertions or arguments. Then, I use this evidence to lead into my own reasoning. Another aspect of my writing style is that I hate fluff and unnecessary descriptors. Although there are times to use advanced words and complex adjectives, I often find the use of these distracting from the point the author is looking to prove.
(3) What are your key terms for good writing (or terms that help to define what good writing is for/to you)? Please generate an actual list and quickly define them and then defend how they support both your definition of writing and you as a writer.
Organized paragraph/sentence structure: allows for a reader to see what direction the writer is going in, and have a clear idea of where they are in the work. This helps me as a writer, because I can think about how I am guiding those who read my papers.
Descriptive and concise language: Language that allows the reader to create an image in their head, but does not distract from the intent of the text. It can often be difficult to do this, creating an interesting and accurate description. This helps me because
Little deviation from main topic: Although touching on relevant subjects or exploring unique ideas can be interesting in writing, it is critical that the writer stays on topic. Deviating from a topic can cause the reader to become confused or mix up arguments that the writer is trying to make. When I write, I like to think that my main priority is captivating the reader’s full attention. The best way to do this is to stick to a point or path, so there is a clear journey for the reader.
Consideration of others opinions when writing: Especially in pieces where the writer argues something, it is important to bring into and evaluate opposing arguments. Conceding and rebutting is a very important process that gives credibility to a writer’s own arguments.
Grammar: correct grammar, no one wants to read something that makes no sense.
Spelling: this is so easy these days that it shouldn’t be an issue
Punctuation: correct punctuation, allows for the writer to follow the story or paper without confusion.
