“Oh! It’s a wind clan Solaris!” Lumiere all but pranced through the bamboo stalks, despite the irritably grumbling ursa behind her. She was on a quest for knowledge and bear or no bear, she was going to explore the world to get it. “How fascinating! I wonder where they make their dens.”

  Running ahead, she jogged up to a tiger-striped imperial. “Oh, I love the blue of your wings! So bright! Do you find it helps you blend into the skies. Well, though, that’s a silly question.” She dodged under one wing to get a better look at the dragon as she circled her. “With the bright red tiger striping, I would have thought that would be better camouflage on the ground. I do admit you have me a bit stumped, beautiful coloring or not. And your goggles, they probably help keeping all this wind out of your eyes.”

  She reached up to touch the goggles when Solaris shouldered her aside. “You can’t just go touching random dragons, Lumiere. It’s rude.”

  The skydancer snorted and turned, only to cry out in delight. “Now YOU are a remarkable vision in camoflague. Look, look Solaris! See how she seems to have a tree growing in her wings. Can you imagine her in the Viridian Labyrinth? Oh my, she’d be almost impossible to spot. And what lovely flowers. You just practically bloom with them!”

  She caught one of the falling petals and smiled at the other skydancer. “You are lovely.”

  “Yes, yes, she is lovely. You learned all about camouflage. Now can we go?”

  “Shadowbinder no. She was a nature dragon, we need to find a wind dragon.”

  “Oh for Light’s sake,” the ursa muttered and turned. “Look! There. He looks like a wind dragon.”

  She gestured with one paw to a rather imposing ridgeback male.

  With a delighted sound, Lumiere bounded over only to stop and stare up at the much larger dragon. “No Solaris. He’s a lightning dragon. Do you see his eyes? I was doing some reading--”

  “I thought you said books were boring.”

  “Not all of them. Now listen please. Lightning dragons have that brilliant blue for their eyes, but he’s perfect. After all, ridgebacks originated in the Shifting Expanse, didn’t you know?”

  The bear groaned.

  “You still are lovely, sir,” Lumi said, grinning up at him. “Your clown markings are just outsanding. So soft and subtle. And you would blend perfectly into the wind territory. Quite handsome if I do say so myself.”

  “Don’t hit on any dragons, Lumi.”

If the skydancer heard her, she paid the ursa no mind, already running headlong toward a small fae. She was squealing with delight as she skidded to a stop--her youth and lack of tact showing horribly. The bear galloped after her but Lumi was already chattering away.

  “You are beautiful. Lavender is one of my favorite colors. And fae’s probably just float right along on the wind, am I right? See, Solaris, now she is a perfect wind dragon.”

  “She doesn’t blend at all!”

  “Nonsense. Her white scales probably disappear completely against the sky and not even that, but fae are so small that high in the sky, you’re not going to see her. She’s a perfect specimen.”

  Solaris snorted. “You’re making this up. Let’s go. That’s a lovely rose you have there, madam.”

  Then the bear shoved her charge back in the direction of the Tangled Wood. Though at the rate they were going today they wouldn’t make it home before Lumiere got distracted again.
