simon riley sitting in the vet’s office. his beloved, retired military dog sat obediently between his legs.
simon strokes riley’s head and tells her she’s a good girl as they anxiously wait.
riley’s ears perk at a commotion outside. the lady at the front desk hides a giggle as she looks expectantly at the front door.
simon watches as you try to haul the big dog into the vet office. the lady at the front desk doesn’t move to help. instead she laughs and tells you “he’s put his breaks on.” he watches as the big dog sits and you use your weight to push from behind.
you huff out a laugh as you make it you your seat. the big dog seemingly showing some pity. “it’s the same thing every time.”
simon just looks down at riley and gives her an affectionate pat. they wait like that for a few minutes before the vet comes out and calls “riley?”
both simon and you stand up and the vet laughs. “sorry. i’m after..” they look down at the paperwork in hand. “riley riley.”
you sit back down, a little confused. your eyes follow the man and his obedient dog, riley riley, as they follow the vet. you look to the girl at the front desk and can’t help but ask “his dogs name is riley riley?”
“yeah. simon riley and riley riley. cute pair those two.”
you do nothing but hum. bit obnoxious you think. to name a dog after yourself.

eleven.
“absolutely not.”
you blink at him. “what?”
simon straightens in front of you, already shrugging out of his hoodie like this is a decision he’s made and won’t be revisiting. he puts the hoodie on you, helping your arms through. he scoops up the two dogs leads then.
“you’re not walkin’ on that,” he says, nodding at your ankle. “and i’m not leavin’ you here.”
“i can hop-”
“no.” the word is final.
he crouches in front of you, back turned, broad and steady. he doesn’t rush you. “c’mon,” he says quietly. “piggyback.”
you hesitate, pride flaring uselessly then carefully loop your arms around his shoulders. he lifts you easily, hands firm at the backs of your thighs.
you let out a startled laugh. “you make that look way too easy.”
-
the walk home is slow. the dogs fault more than simon’s. you don’t mind it though. they sniff and smell most everything.
simon adjusts his grip when you shift, careful not to jostle your ankle. you can feel his warmth through the hoodie you wear, the steady rise and fall of his breathing. he smells like clean laundry and coffee and something grounding underneath it all.
“sorry,” you murmur near his ear. “didn’t mean to be a hassle.”
he exhales, a quiet sound of disapproval. “you got hurt,” he says. “i’m helping. that’s it.”
you rest your cheek against his shoulder, heart doing something stupid and soft.
“do you need a rest?” you ask. fingers absently mindlessly playing with the hem on simon’s shirt. it’s driving him crazy.
“luv,”
“hm.” you hum in answer, waiting to see what he says.
“quit askin’ me that.”
“okay,” you can’t help but smile. you drop your hand from simon’s collar. he misses the contact immediately.
your riley perks up then. close to home, he jumps and barks with excitement. he turns to riley riley as if to ask ‘your coming to play at my house?’ and then he pulls simon along.
simon doesn’t stumble but the sudden pull makes him tighten his grip instinctively, adjusting you higher against his back so you don’t slip. “steady,” he mutters. his gruff voice seemingly calming the dogs.
you laugh into his shoulder.
the house comes into view just as your riley gives another excited bark. the front gate creaks open. mrs. henderson emerges. the old lady from next door.
she’s small and wiry, silver hair pinned tight at the back of her head, one hand gripping her walker like it’s an extension of her. her eyes, sharp land on simon.
“…young lady?” she calls out, voice stern despite the tremor in it. “why is that man carrying you?”
simon freezes mid-step.
you feel the subtle tension ripple through him. simon feels possessive, his protective instinct locking in. he knows your moment is due to end.
your riley, however, pulls at the leash till simon drops it, trots straight up to mrs. henderson and sits perfectly at her side, tail wagging politely. he presses his head against her side like he’s reporting in.
she softens instantly, free hand coming down to scratch behind his ears.
“well at least you’re behaving,” she mutters fondly.
simon clears his throat. “she twisted her ankle,” he says evenly. respectful and calm. “dog got a little enthusiastic.”
she squints. hums and turns to waddle back into her home.
simon puts you down then. right at your front gate. he steadies you. tells you he should get going. bids you farewell. you give riley riley one last pat. it all happens so quickly. the old lady turns at her door and is surprised to only see you. she tries to look down the street. but simon has jogged off.
“why didn’t you invite that man inside?” she asks. you don’t have an answer for her, cheeks hot with embarrassment.
it’s not till he’s half way home that simon realises he didn’t get your number.

fourteen.
simon hesitates. “…ma’am?”
“you heard me.”
the older woman disappears before he can argue. riley riley looks up at him like well?
simon exhales. “alright,” he mutters, and follows.
inside, mrs. henderson’s house is warm and immaculate. simon steps in as riley riley pads in cautiously, tail low but curious.
“shoes,” the older lady’s voice leave no room for argument.
simon obeys instantly.
she gestures toward a small sitting room. “sit.”
simon sits.
she disappears into the kitchen without another word.
simon perches on the edge of the couch like he’s in a briefing room. back straight. hands on his knees. riley riley settles at his feet.
mrs. henderson returns with two delicate teacups on a tray. she hands one to him. “tea,” she says.
simon nods politely. “thank you.”
her own riley pads in carefully, no jumping, no chaos and immediately lowers himself beside her walker like he’s on guard duty. mrs. henderson reaches down to scratch behind his ear. “there’s a good boy,” she murmurs. her riley leans into it with dignified restraint. not a single bark.
simon watches this betrayal in silence. he takes a sip of the tea then. half distracted by the sight he doesn’t smell it. but once the taste hits his tongue there’s no denying, it’s bourbon. he clears his throat and swallows.
mrs. henderson nods approvingly at her dog “he’s very good today,” she says.
“yes, ma’am.”
“wasn’t yesterday.”
simon almost smiles. “he just got a little excited. doesn’t know his size.”
mrs. henderson studies him.
“you live alone?”
“yes, ma’am.”
her riley inches closer to her, resting his chin gently against her knee. simon wants to tell him he’s laying it on a little thick. instead he just smiles at the dog. he leans down to pat his own riley.
“lonely?”
simon doesn’t answer straight away. “…sometimes,” he admits.
mrs. henderson hums.
“she’s good company,” she says, nodding towards his riley. she then looks to her own riley. “as is this guy.”
simon understands.
“my neighbour is also lonely sometimes…”
“oh?” simon blushes. he looks down as he asks, “what about their friend? the one with the loud car?”
mrs. henderson can’t hold her laugh. though she is polite enough to try hide it as she drinks her tea. “she’s a new friend i think. she had a car full of dogs.”

“your still here.” simon says, relieved to see you. he’d just about run to the dog park, riley hot at his heels as the sun sunk closer to the horizon. he’d been held up at the base longer than he expected.
you turn with a soft smile on your face. “this boofhead was determined to stay the night if you didn’t show.” you motion down at the big dog sat at your feet. “i was actually contemplating leaving the guy here.” you laugh.
simon laughs at that.
his own riley greets you. he watches as you bend down to pat her. “hello my sweet riley riley.” your fingers brushing through her coat as she tries to lick your face. the dogs greet then as you stand. your own riley bumping into you though you don’t fall.
“hello simon riley.”
he huffs out a laughs and then swallows nervously, “hi.” he’s not sure if it was the run or they way you were looking at him but his palms feel sweaty. he’s about to ask you how you are when riley, your riley [his riley would never. she’s too polite] puts his giant head right into simon’s crotch.
“you big oaf!” you yell as you attempt to hold the big dog back, two hands around his collar.
simon is lost for words.
“you are so embarrassing!” you yell.
simon watches as you pick up the nearest stick and throw it. the two dogs chase after it.
“i am so sorry about him. he has no manners what so ever.”
“it’s fine. he’s not so bad.” simon tries to brush it off. “i’m used to hanging around men with bad behaviour.”
“oh?”
“uh yeah.” simon clears his throat. he’s not sure what to say next. should he tell you about them? should he ask you about your work?
“these the same guys that signed you up to adopt riley?” you ask.
he’s grateful for your question. he’s always been bad at holding a conversation. awkward silences and long uncomfortable pauses. “yes.” he confirms. “spose they aren’t all that bad when you put it that way.”

okay so simon’s at the dog park. it’s been a few days since riley’s vet appointment and the physical therapy is going well.
riley has made friends with a larger dog. one that’s got a collar and a leash but no owner in sight. simon is talking kindly to the dog, asking where their owner is when he recognises the dog. “hey aren’t you-”
“riley you fucking asshole, c’mere.” you scream from across the park.
there’s a brief moment where simon thinks you’re talking to him but then he remembers the vets office. two dogs called riley. he huffs out a laugh and picks the leash up before the big dog can get away.
when you reach simon your out of breath, hands-on-knees-and-unable-to-speak out of breath. he offers the leash but you wave him away trying to catch your breath.
it takes you a few moments but once you look over and up to simon you thank him for catching the dog. “he’s a real asshole sometimes. loves everyone but me.” you then mumble on about how he’s not even yours. you just can’t say no to the old lady next door. she’s getting older now, less mobile but there’s no doubt she does everything she can for the big bastard dog. it’s only then that it dawns on you. you know this man.
“your-”
“simon.”
“right. simon riley. and she’s-”
“riley.”
“riley riley.” you hum.

“y’know i didn’t name her right?”
“what?”
“i didn’t name her.”
simon can see you look at him from the corner of his eye. he doesn’t dare look though. he’s been having fun watching you introduce the dogs to people who ask.
“this big boofhead is riley and this sweet girl is riley riley and this other boofhead-” you throw your thumb in simon’s direction as if to say can you believe it “-is also a riley.” the older couple laugh.
the man smiles “sounds like your collecting them!”
“i am kind of aren’t i” you laugh.
simon’s lips tilt up. he can imagine how your brows scrunch together. he’s come to realise it’s your thinking face. he likes it.
“you adopted a dog called riley…” you test slowly. “on purpose?”
“no. not on purpose.”
“you adopted a dog called riley by accident.”
simon stops then and looks at you. “also no.” he runs his eyes over your face. he hasn’t asked you for your number yet but he’s gone close. “the boss’ missus does this thing through work. retired or injured military dogs.” he explains. “the boys i work with saw this girl and put my name down for her thinking it was funny. i couldn’t say no when they called me.”
it’s the most simon’s ever said to you. it makes him nervous.
“guess i’ll have to change my opinion of you then.”
“oh yeah?”
“yeah. your not so much a narcissistic asshole as i once thought.”
he laughs at that as you walk off after the dogs. he’s not moved yet. eyes down and smiling hard. he thinks about it for a moment before he calls after you. “wait. what do you meant not so much?”
